Most individuals wouldn't have personal light, hence the ones hanging on trees and such. She's quite lucky to have one for herself.
She carries it everywhere because she has a certain very unfortunate phobia for someone to have in a lightless land.
Decently long lifespan, but no life cycle. Once they're spent, they're spent. They're getting harder and harder to come by, and will run out for good eventually.
The birds gather them from all over and exchange them for... whatever they feel like, basically. They're kind of inscrutable.
