If I may bug in here.

I personally noticed that sketches seem to feel more alive, than finished polished work. Though, not always

Note:I say that from artist perspective, not as watcher.

Perhaps because one can project some degree of interpretation into sketches, where finished works feel a bit more cemented into place

Interesting idea.

Oh, maybe also, that in sketches we will overlook some anatomy and etc mistakes, more focused on idea itself, while in, as you said, cemented art all those mistakes will be clearly visible.

At least, this is second idea that came to my mind
