Hold the bottle vertical and tap the top of the cap, this will let the freed bubbles collect at the top so all you get is a facefull of CO2, with little to no liquid coming along for the ride. The soda will end up halfway to flat, but better all of a half-flat soda than half of a quarter flat soda with a side order of 'now I gotta clean up this spill."

I had always thought that tapping the cap did nothing to prevent a face full of soda. Maybe I'm wrong...?

By tapping the top, you jostle the bubbles clinging to the sides loose, so they collect at the top, that way when they expand once you open the can, they aren't pushing all this soda ahead of them.

The BEST thing to do, is put the can or bottle back in the fridge and grab an undropped one. let the dropped one sit for a day and it'll reabsorb the released gas and be back to normal.

A slow hand is best with these. ^_^ Twist the cap *slooowly* open, and listen to the hiss... if it starts sounding like it's gargling soda, tighten it again quick!
