I'm in the middle of taking a break from working like mad on a huge animation featuring this guy... so that I can work like mad on a giant christmas picture to hopefully get it done before the day in question. Gonna be a busy 'passum for a while. BUT, I got done everything I scheduled for today and had a few minutes so I decided to pose the new model so I could show him off here. He's a birb with iridescent feathers!
One of the reasons I wanted to take this guy on was because I felt it was time I tried the challenge of making feathered wings. It was kind of a pain and they only just barely work and don't look as nice as I'd hoped, but they're the best I can do for now! Despite these issues though, I hope he's looking alright.
I whipped this pose up merely to show off the model so I don't know how well the pose represents the character. Hopefully
jykinturah is okay with it. :P

Hey, one of the "few people you talk back and forth" here ! :p I think setting up a discord for this purpose would be an awesome idea. I could set it up for you, if you want ! It's the least I can do for your help :)
We could share our wips, give our thought to each other, our tips and all !
I was looking for one myself, sooo :p

If you (or someone else) do set up a discord for general 3D modeling / retopo / rigging / animation / etc., I'm sure I'm not alone in that I would be extremely interested in joining, assuming it would be open to the proletariat. ^_^
I've been somewhat shocked by the fact that I can't find anyone to talk to about the subject in furry, despite how large, tech-forward, and art-focused the community is. It's really difficult to find anyone with experience even in just the sculpt->retopo->rig->fur for non-humanoids (or non-generic Zbrush SpikyAliens), so I've been having to "roll my own" the whole way, without guidance.

I know, right ?! that is insane !
I've set up something myself, I'm just awaiting for Ruaidri's approuval (He's busy, right now, so it might take some time before he can look into it), 'cuz it's a little focused around him for now. But I'm 100% for this, for theses reasons.

I wish I could tell you what the solution to this is but I lack the rendering knowledge. In real life we have objects all around us bouncing light all over the place so harsh lighting schemes like the one depicted are very situational. I'd love to be able to see more of the detail that you're putting so much effort into creating. ;)
Here is a Blender tutorial I saw which teaches stuff that looks useful to learn from the get-go, before you spend time learning wrong things:

Depends on what you wanna do. For a still like this you could probably get away with fairly cheap hardware if you're willing to wait a bit for it to render. Anything with 8GB of ram will probably do the trick. You miight be able to get away with 6, but you'll be pushing it and won't be able to add much besides just the character, I'd say. You can even just use your CPU if you're really patient, in which case literally any CPU will do, though you could run out of ram if your system ram is a bit light. If you wanna animate, just... save yourself the pain and get the best thing you can afford. I'm running on a 2080ti for my rendering and honestly even that's slow for cycles rendering. :P
I only made him recently and haven't done much with him yet, he kind of got immediately overshadowed when I made the pink lizard character I've been posting a lot of lately. Everyone loved her so much they instantly forgot about the birb. x3 Here's a quick ref I doodled up if you're curious though! https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37866795/
Funny you should mention it- I created him specifically for the purpose of milking relentless orgasms out of, since my other subby guy is in chastity and can't do that. As for the beaks, ring gags and ball gags handle most situations fairly nicely I find. x3

Machinophile lizard does have a lot of personality to her I can't deny that! But this boy is adorable, really fits the bill for a cute and subby bird boy. Would like to see more of him but I am a bit biased. ^
...especially if he is going to be milked for every dollop in him. I love chastity but that shouldn't be all to a character! And yes, ring gags make excellent safety gear for those abusing the bird. Gotta think about the important people here~!

Gah, you make just the most gorgeous characters. Despite the little flaws here and there, they still look stunning. Your designs are fantastic.
Without looking at the tags, I'm assuming he's a Corvid, like a crow. I feel like his toes are maybe a little short? Or maybe it's just me though.

Thanks! Unfortunately that's gonna be a long ways out. Going to be my longest animation yet which means it's going to take a while... then I have to do fluid sim stuff which is going to take a long time due to the length of the animation, and -then- I get to render all over 4000 frames of it. So yeah, this is gonna be a long term project. x3
So hey you wanna do my wings next? X3
Hah, even if I could pay you to do such a thing I bet you're so exhausted after working so hard on such glorious wings already :3 And to me these do look great, rigging them must have been a pain and I too wonder how easily they deform, chirp

Looks to me like you've already got a pretty solid model! But hey, maybe someday. I like me some burds. x3
The wings do... okay. They're not great. I had to cheat a bit on the rigging and you can see where they do weird stuff if you really look for it, and they're also not super flexible so keeping them from clipping into stuff is hard. But they're just functional enough to do the job so that'll have to do for now, haha.

Oh wow this is a surprise to see, somehow missed it!
I wouldn't say this is out of character, esp if he's feeling comfortable with whoever's around ahaha
I really do love the wings! I think you did very well, super excited to see what wings you put on future models as you improve.

No particles on the wings- I started out trying that way, but found I had a lot of trouble blending between the particle-hair-based 'feathers' and the modeled feathers. I still had to make that transition between his wings and his back, and it's not perfect, but it makes more sense to happen there so it's a little easier to ignore the transition. The wings are all one consistent look which helps. Also I found the hair wanted to misbehave a lot when posing the character, so this was a bit easier to control.
The feathers are all just 2D planes with some transparency and bump mapping to give them a feathery look, pretty standard practice. Similar to hair cards, if you're familiar with those. The only thing I really did different is instead of a single plane, I used 2 planes for each feather that are perfectly aligned all around the edges, but sort of 'puff out' in the middle to give each feather some third dimension. Single 2D planes on their own have issues with disappearing from certain angles but with this method they look like actual "things", which is nice.
It's a little hard to explain in words, I might have to make a tutorial for it or something. :P Anyway, once I had my a feather object made, I just duplicated the heck out of it and placed each feather individually which was super tedious and time consuming but got the job done in the tidiest way possible. You miiight be able to use blender's particle systems to help place feathers but I find that tends to be a bit too chaotic for something as organized as bird wings so it's probably best just to roll up those sleeves and spend a few hours placing them manually!
