In my mind, the Impostors probably mated with another species in a way similar to how they breed with Crewmates currently, although it is likely that since Crewmates show such maternal tendencies towards any offspring that vaguely resemble their own child, more of the mini-impostors survived with Crewmate host parents instead, leading to more to adapt to Crewmate's life cycle instead!
