The Wicked Beam
"... I could only watch from a great distance as the Rebel darted among the stricken Zandak, pausing only long enough to impart a push upon each of them, sending them hurtling through space towards the nearby planet. Though only a fraction of them would survive long enough to make landfall, the Rebel was determined in his efforts.
The Guardian howled at the act of defiance, and spread wide its arms in response. A vast Rune Command took shape between them, flickering into existence sequence by sequence. As it came to completion, first came a small pinprick of crimson near the Guardian. Then, the universe crumpled away, and the pinprick unfurled into a vast bloom of Source that flowed into the Guardian's Rune. Momentarily, I was mesmerized by the infinitely unfolding depths of the Singularity, overcome by the inexplicable wish to be unmade by it. By the time my wits had come back to me, I had somehow retreated to an even greater distance, and the Command was fully powered.
A wicked beam lanced out from it, streaking across space as if to cut the universe in two.
I do not know what had weakened the Guardian such that it preferred to wield the Storm against the Rebel, rather than its own powerful Essence, but the end result would be much the same: A thousand Zandak died as the Guardian pivoted the beam towards its target. But the Rebel was small and swift, and courageously darted among the fallen to finish his work, narrowly avoiding the screaming destruction that would instantly erase all evidence of his existence.
The Rebel then turned its rage on the Guardian and quickly closed the gap between them, carrying a wave of angry spirit that danced at his fingertips, eager to be wielded. I fled altogether just before the moment of contact. The shockwave of their impact tore at my back as I everted away.
Though my cowardice causes me shame, I am certain that I would have been killed if I had dared to witness the conflict in its entirety."
