ABC of the Apocalypse - Byiol, the Parasite
Adronar had not come alone.
Other shooting stars followed the first and with them an immense number of aberrant creatures descended over the spoilt remains of our dark earth. Wherever we turned, the Devourer's forces surrounded us making us aware of our impending doom and in that darkness, while the tentacles of that being beyond human comprehension harpooned our world to absorb it completely, any hope of fighting them was futile.
Paradoxically, our first casualty was not because of Adronar or his followers. It was the fault of another abomination, a slimy, silent creature that had woven its web of deceptions in the pitch black starless sky in order to take its first victim. Byiol the Parasite, he called himself. That shapeless mass of filaments looked more like a mushroom than a sentient being, but we knew that it had a consciousness as we knew that it was hostile towards us as he had come hidden under Adronar's mantle to feed on us. The thin extensions of his limbs traveled for miles and where the Devourer's tentacles could not reach we could be sure of finding traces of the Parasite's pale strands.
If only one of those diaphanous threads came into contact with a creature, it began to suck them, merciless and slowly digesting their skin, hair, nails, teeth, every single part of the body except for the blood which he was forced to expel by evaporating it on his back. The strange little white mushrooms that grew in his presence and the smell of congealed blood in the air were the only signs of his arrival, beyond that there was nothing left to do but pray.
The surface of our world was now lost. We could only flee underground.
