You've a special kill for telling these sorts of stories, and this one came together wonderfully. Its clear how much research and attention to detail you've poured into it too. The scenes after the pilot's instrument panel was blown out were especially tense.
Cute story. Reminds me of this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shepherd.
In my early Hog days, we were mentored by veteran Spad pilots. Whooo...the stories they’d tell! I had one crusty old Major tell about the time he was running thru a valley near the Cambodian border, rounded a bend and found himself face to face with an NVA convoy. Thinking with his spine, rather than his head, he hosed off a willie pete 2.75” rocket that hit the lead vehicle dead center in the radiator and essentially turned the vehicle inside out.
Then there was the guy who’d chug a shot, pour another on his chest and light it. His call sign was “Growth.” (He looked like a...growth.)
I grew up in a MUCH different Air Force. Example of today’s: https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/433096/.
