Petie shouldered his backpack as he walked out of the PCA building, school had just let out for the day and the little teddiursa’s mind was a buzz… not a single thought had to do with classes. Bugging him was the results of Team Pre-K’s recent match… three loses and a tie in the other guys favor WASN’T exactly something to be proud of… and he was still sore from getting knocked around the arena.
Another thing, and the more important one to Petie, he was in love… or at least it was one heck of a high-key crush. He honestly wasn’t sure which. It had all started a few days ago in the cafeteria after a purugly girl named Courtney, wearing the loudest outfit he’d ever seen, had interrupted his normal habit of swiping folks desserts by swiping the sweets before HE got the chance. One small squabble later and Petie found the large cat girl enjoying HIS cake… while sitting on him to show him who was in charge.
Needless to say he was upset, Courtney was twice his weight so whether she fully intended to crush him he wasn’t sure but she did a fairly good job of nearly caving in his ribs, so after he could move again he went out looking to get even. When he finally managed to find her she was working on her Captivate move. Snooping around like he had been there was NO way he expected or could even try and defend against the attack… or the blinding flash of colors from the lights reflecting off Courtney’s outfit and accessories.
When he could finally see straight again she had left and oddly enough the feelings for her stirred up by the Captivate hadn’t… he wasn’t sure if that was normal, but at the moment Petie really didn’t care. All he knew was he had to find someway to get her to notice him and maybe, possibly like him. Right now he’d been leaving various forms of candy, assorted bags, boxes of chocolates, etc, etc, in her locker with notes (being smart enough to add his name to the notes since he’d seen enough TV to know leaving them anonymous only caused trouble) but he’d been to nervous to actually approach her directly. And with summer approaching soon he needed to come up with something FAST.
He sighed to himself as he strolled through the quad, about to head home for the day and try and figure it all out, when he noticed a large group of mon gathered around a poster on the wall. Naturally curious Petie decided to check it out. Unfortunately, being at the least a full head shorter then all the folks there actually getting to the poster proved difficult.
“Ow ow OW!! Hey! Watch the elbows! I’m SHORT not INVISIBLE here you know!!” he muttered as he tried to get through to see what the people were looking at. Finally managing to poke his head through the front he found himself looking at a poster of several mon in the heat of battle with the title “PCA Summer Exams Combat Tournament” He looked at it blankly for a moment before actually finding some text to describe what the heck this thing actually was.
“The SUMMER EXAMS COMBAT TOURNAMENT, or SECT for short, is a annual tournament held during the course of the summer for any grade level to enjoy…” he began reading, before somebody else forcing their way to the front of the crowd nearly knocked him on his face and made him lose his spot “Oww! Watch it!!” he shouted angrily to them before looking back at the poster, accidentally skipping a whole block of text.
“…grade levels for the prize of not only a hefty amount extra credit for any class you choose, but also a large grant for any aspiring student wanting to go to college. Not to mention the snazzy trophy! So now tell me this students: Will you join for the grant money? For the extra credit that you so desperately need to pass that one class you are terrible in? Perhaps you will join only for the thrill of battle? Or maybe there is something much greater you are fighting for. It is all up to you.” By now the little bear’s eyes had gone wide as he grinned, a new scheme buzzing in his head… and the moving crowd behind him kept him from reading any further into the poster as he had to move fast to keep from getting stepped on.
“This is PERFECT!!” Petie though, scurrying along “I can impress Courtney by winning this thing!! I’d just be going up against other freshmen anyway so what’s the harm?” he giggled to himself in excitement “And if I DO win not only will I impress Courtney but I’ll FINALLY have a trophy of my own to go up on the shelf with all my big brother and big sisters! This is just PERFECT!!” he mentally cheered as he hurried to the office to get the sign in form for this.
A while later a grinning Petie strolled out of the office having filled out and submitted his form. The little bears head was already swimming with thoughts about how big the trophy would be and how to get Courtney to come see his matches. He was focusing so much on these thoughts that he didn’t notice the familiar Jolteon girl walking down the hall till he strolled right into her.
“Oooph! Petie?” Julian said when she regained her balance, looking down at the little teddiursa who’d been knocked on his bottom and was rubbing his nose “You should watch where you’re going.” She remarked, pulling the little bear to his feet. He blushed at this and brushed himself off, still grinning “Sowwie Juwian… er… I mean Sorry Julian. Guess I was daydreamin…”
She chuckled, ruffling the little guys hair “I can see that, so what’s got you so cheerful? Somebody give you “Free Candy” again?” she remarked, giving him a slight warning glare about bumming sweets off folks. Gulping Petie shook his head, scared of getting in trouble again “No! No! Nothing like that!” Julian chuckled, grinning again “Good! Now what’s got you so happy?” Giving a sigh of relief Petie smiled “Oh I’m just gonna be in the PCA SECT, that’s all.”
“Really?” Julian asked, looking surprised “Wow… that must have taken a lot of guts for you to do!” she said grinning proudly at Petie and giving his hair another ruffle. The little bear just chuckled and blushed shyly “Well… what’s the worst that could happen? Just gonna be me against a bunch of other freshmen right?” he asked cheerfully. Julian just blinked at this and looked at him silently for a minute or two before finally speaking up “Petie? You didn’t read the full poster did you?”
“… no… what does that have to do with anything?” he asked, looking at her confused when she suddenly grabbed his paw “Gah! Julian! What are ya doin!?” he called as she pulled him along, keeping a firm grip on him like an untrustworthy toddler. Scurrying along as fast as he could was the best he could do to keep up with her thanks to his short legs as she pulled him straight to the poster.
There was still a crowd around the poster, though a much smaller one, but this didn’t matter thanks to Julian being much taller, spikier, and not as shy about using her elbows as Petie. In no time they were at the front of the crowd, Julian pulled Petie in front of her, lifted him up by his armpits like a two year old, and held him so his nose was all but touching a certain part of the poster “Read.” She said firmly.
Head still spinning from the ride it took Petie a minute to get himself reoriented enough to read it “Geeze! Alright alweady I’m weading! Er… I mean… oh you know what I mean!” he muttered as he started reading “After signing up for the tournament you are to combat against many different students of… varying…. grade levels………” he said, the implications of this slowly sinking in as images of a few of the Sophmore, Junior, and worst of all Senior students he’d seen walking around the campus slowly filled his mind.
Still holding the little teddiursa up Julian asked him in a worried tone “Petie? Did you already sign up for the tournament?” the only response she got from the rather limp little mon in her arms was a soft whimper and an even softer “Mommy…”
