The last photo of Kush (female snow leopard) for now. That's okay, though, since we both know she'll be back here soon. In the meantime, she'll let some other animals have a turn in the limelight.
This photo was taken when Kush was cleaning herself. Nothing too concerning, but when a big cat (which happens to be in very close proximity) looks at you and licks its lips...well, let's just say anyone would be a little unnerved! The good thing is snow leopards are not man-eaters and almost never attack people. Even better, Kush just happens to be a very friendly snow leopard and wouldn't dream of trying to eat one of her friends (assuming they keep feeding her). =P
Two of my friends who work with her closely said they are trying to "convert" me to snow leopards. Though I am a tiger man through and through, being with them has imbued me with a tremendous amount of respect, fascination and love. They are absolutely incredible animals and if you have the time, I would highly suggest going to YouTube or the Snow Leopard Trust (http://www.snowleopard.org/) and watching video of them...amazing.
I would also suggest going to the Snow Leopard Trust website (http://www.snowleopard.org/) and ordering from their store. They offer all sorts of neat products that are often made by people living with the snow leopard. It helps conserve the species and allows for people to have extra income they can use for medicine or even sending their kids to school. It is an excellent program and I frequent their store often. I would recommend the slippers.

Snow leopards are found in mountainous central Asia, also called "the roof of the world". They are acclimated for some of the harshest terrain and climate in the world and are extremely elusive. Sadly, snow leopards are not elusive enough to escape the hand of man. They are an endangered species and there may be as few as 3,000 left in the wild with populations decreasing. Individuals are often the victims of revenge killing after taking village livestock, poaching for their bones and skin, prey depletion and habitat loss.

A tiger man you will always be- but you can join the band wagon for another species too. If I think about it, I've been involved with 6 different animal conservation groups... save one and save them all!
I admit this one of Kush totally attracted me- form the Tai Lungishness of the pose, to the black lips, to the pure characteristic expression. It's all there.
It's all funny becuase as I was looking at this photo, the smell of "cat breath" suddenly appeared in my room... so whatever blew into my window helped the atmosphere. XD

Has anyone risked trying to get closer, like touching her? :) I know that in general it's bad idea, but I know one particular snow leopard in one zoo who is that friendly with her keepers. She was raised to be this way though, but I don't know even origin of Kush.
I've never heard about anybody being hurt by a snow leopard in a zoo, and fequency of snow leopard attacks in the wild is in once-in-a-decade range. Probably this is partly caused by rarity of snow leopards...
I'll never work in a zoo, because I'll surely lose a limb or two; I can't be trusted. :D

Nah... we try not to risk very much because if anything were to happen, it'd be the animal that suffers. Kush is friendly and tolerant, but she does like her space and I wouldn't really venture to try any kind of physical contact...and that's okay, that's her' right. I adore her.
