Week 1
We had just moved into the apartment with the school week just around the corner. I had greeted Isaac when he came in, all snugged up in his puffy jacket with his bags. I offered to help, and together we transferred all his stuff over in three trips. Compared to MY stash, which took me and my parents FIVE.
The other roommates were there (David and Jack) and we all went along introducing ourselves. My parents, out of their benevolence, made a Happy-New-Roommate dinner for the four of us, including a large cake, which we all happily indulged upon. It was a yellow cake, with rich chocolate frosting – one of my favorites. After another half an hour of laughter, my parents grabbed their coats, wished us all well and were out the door. My mom stole a quick hug from me and told me to call her everyday.
Me and my roommates spent another hour downstairs in that living room, breaking the ice, exchanging favorite movies and books, what we want to do with our majors, etc. Jack and David eventually wanted to get some sleep, so they nodded their farewells and disappeared upstairs.
Stretching, I turn around and see Isaac in the kitchen, scooping out the last slice of cake onto a clean plate and picking up a fork. He looked over and our eyes met.
Isaac smiled. “Hey, uh, I’m gonna have this last piece of cake. Is that okay?”
I shrugged. “Hey, if you’re not going to eat it I was going to. Help yourself.”
Isaac beamed and walked back into the living room and sat down next to me, putting a mouthful of the desert in.
“So, Isaac, if you had to choose a superpower, what would it be?” I asked.
Isaac thought for a moment, slowly chewing as he processed the question. He then swallowed. “I’d like to read people’s minds.”
“Ah, so you can get their deepest darkest secrets and spread em out to the world, eh?”
Isaac shook his head. “If I can know what people are worried or scared about, maybe I can help them out better and make them happy. I can’t help them if I don’t know what’s wrong, you know?” He stuffed more cake into his mouth.
“Yeah,” I said, slowly nodding my head. “Good point.”
