I recall being completely mystified as a kid the first time somebody opened up the hood of a classic VW Beetle and finding no engine there. It was the first time I had heard of a rear-engine car like this 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. The modern edition is front-wheel drive with an engine in the front. It may be that I’m a silly old bear, but somehow I find that a little bit sad.

Not silly at all, I'd say! I get a similar feeling when I see the newer editions of the Mini. If modern car manufacturers want to develop a new car, they may by all means do so, but I'd prefer that they did so while leaving the legacy of the classics intact. ^__^

Way back in the day, an acquaintance of mine dropped a Porsche 356 engine in a Beetle. He was going to try to cram in one from a 911 but the Beetle suspension just wasn’t made for it.

Perhaps a bit of prescience there on the part of your friend since both Volkswagen and Porsche are now divisions of the same company.

I find the front-engine front wheel drive vehicles to be a little sad too. It might be an advantage to have the engine weight over the drive wheels. But it has a different feel than the other vehicle setups do.

Do you remember if 1963 is one of the first years of the Super Beetle?

I confess that I once owned a Dodge Omni. Like the new Beetles, it was front-engine, front-wheel-drive. I rather liked it, especially in snow with some on-purpose snow tires in front.

The Super Beetle was introduced in 1971 (Wikipedia is your friend)

Ah! Those Omni's are kind of rare down here. It's nice that yours performed well (especially in rougher road conditions).

Ahhh. This is absolutely true. I was hoping you knew something about it that Wikipedia didn't know. It's definitely a great starting point.

That's a late model Type 1 motor 1.6L or better. I know it's not the 1.2L came in the 1963 Type 1 cars. The engine bay looks rather clean.

I've owned a few Bugs over the years and rebuild even more Type 1 motors. So you learn what to look for to ballpark id the motor.

I've worked on many a VW air cooled flat 4 :) The only thing I ever wanted to change was that oil bath air filter ;)

I know. When I was taking Auto Shop in High School, I really enjoyed working on Volkswagens, especially the "Beetle" models.
