The Index is still considered the best VR headset and no VR headset is really overkill though I would always avoid the Windows Mixed Reality stuff just because they tend to be pretty crappy with their tracking. As for alternatives if you look on the used market you can pick up an OG Oculus Rift CV1 or OG HTC Vive for less then $400. If you don't mind the Facebook BS the Quest 2 is a good buy at $300 (though for VRChat I recommend you use either Virtual Desktop or the Link cable to avoid being stuck in Quest only worlds). Or if you don't mind waiting the Decagear-1 is currently being hyped up for $450.
