Yes, in my AU version they are couple. The idea is that before the war in TLK2 Kovu and Kiara run away to build their own pride. So Vitani tries to stop Zira, and calls Kion. He left Rani and the Thee of Life to help in the Prideland, but later decides to stay. And he didn't know that Rani was also pregnant and had 3(!) cubs too...
