Detailed shot of the SP's SD-9 3 axle trucks.
The spotting feature on this truck is the brake cylinders.
Later versions would drop the centre brake cylinder and the wheel base would change slightly, the SD-50 would be the last locomotive these 3 axle trucks would come as standard. The Hyatt bearings may not have been original when this SD-9 was erected, and possibly could have been friction bearings.

Most of the other units only have two wheel set trucks to give you an idea of how early the development of SD9s really are.
They were a step up from the tiny trucks of a steam locomotive's front wheels and a better traction upgrade from earlier diesels to it.
It's really amazing how much locomotive trucks have changed over the last hundred years.. It used to be a big variety when I was little but now it is just the same but these locomotives can do a lot more then just haul a train.. They lug better then anything I have seen, they are able to get a mile long train rolling within mere seconds instead of minutes.
Yeah it is not as fun as it used to be but if you look at it in the name of progress you can see why railroads will never die out from the fans who follow them
