This is another one that I'm quite proud of. It started as a sketch for one of those daily challenges, but I thought it was turning out nicely, so I put quite a bit of work into it over the course of a week or two.
I'm glad I did.
I also made a process image that shows the approach I took. The file is much larger than the maximum size allowed on here, so I'll just link to it.

I made the whole picture in black and white before applying colors to it.

Category Artwork (Digital) / Fantasy
Species Western Dragon
Size 1280 x 960px
File Size 259.8 kB
After looking at it, I'll probably have to send you a link, rather than upload it on here.
FurAffinity has maximum file sizes, and I put it together as a big long reel, so to speak.
Here it is: http://chromamancer.deviantart.com/.....cess-151931982
The main thing to notice is that I basically made the whole picture in black and white before adding colors.
This should give you an idea how I added the details in there, too. Unfortunately, I don't have my sketch saved, I replaced that with another layer when I was working.
Since I can't upload things like that on here, it seems animated process files will be best for this site.
I might have to check into how those are made some time.

I'll post that up in the submission info, so I don't have to re-post it.
Just ask if you have any questions.

Wonderful, wonderful...
I see you've favorited many of Vampire Princess' drawings, something I almost did as well...
There's something magical in your pictures, and now I see what it is.
When I lie down, in those cold nights, dreaming awake of dragons and idyllic landscapes with endless forests, I don't see much color. The color of my dreams is much alike to your technique or Vampire's, it's just light and shadow, turned into evocative tonalities, a mirage of being lost in a sea of wonder.
When I dream, I may see a world of beautiful colors, but what remains in me are the shadowy and mellow portraits made in purple, green and yellow, only a few colors, like what you see when you press your eyes strongly and then try to see, or after staring at a bright light for too long. Perhaps dragons dazzle me so strongly that the effect is the same. I'm glad to have found your gallery (thanks to Narse's favs).
Thank you for sharing your work, please never stop painting.

I'm glad you enjoy my art.
I normally work in black and white, then add color near the end. I've found it is an easier way to focus on lighting and contrast. Adding color too early can over-saturate parts of the picture, or make parts of the picture look either darker or lighter then intended. This lets me first focus on the lighting, then play around with the color until I find a color scheme I think works well.
I'm definitely going to keep posting art, so you don't need to worry about me disappearing.

I spent a moment trying to sort out if the dragon was huge or just close. The little birds on his horns helped settle that for me. :)
One thing I've seen on a number of dragon designs that I've never fully understood: when they sneeze, how do they keep from impaling themselves on their elbow spikes?

Yep. It's decently large.
Sometimes I enjoy the sort of epic impact that comes from making them large like that.
I would assume that the elbow spikes are more like natural weapons or decoration, and not really dangerous to the dragon itself. How many times have you elbowed yourself while sneezing, or seen an animal elbow itself. It is a rather awkward motion. Granted, It would be easier with elbow spikes, but I think it's still perfectly avoidable.
