I figured it was about time to see her boyfriend, and with that, we get to see some of the intersection of interests and a heartwarming moment with them together, too! Now we just need to see more of them do stuff, right? X3
---
Raj stood in the kitchen, his eyes staring half-lidded toward the microwave. The glowing heat box was not particularly exciting to watch, but it had a task that few other appliances could complete. The machine hummed to its own tempo, and its audience of one merely stood impatiently for the song to move on to the next verse. In the distance, the grey cat could hear a second concert with a slightly larger audience - in more than a few ways, he would have noted. The other performer, also a box but less culinary in nature, could sing a lot better, and from the mewling sounds of its audience, the tune was much catchier.
"Aaaand into the Staaaaars, she flieeeess...
Power together, loving forever, opens their eyeeees…”
The audience in the next room over had joined in with the performing television, at least the one sitting on the couch, anyways. Perhaps from a modicum of jealousy, the microwave began to add percussion to its mechanical Gregorian chant. A slow popping began within the bag inside its gullet, and soon it erupted to a chaotic drum solo. Raj was not particularly fond of the tune itself, but he was happy to see progress toward its end.
The cacophony of popping kernels ended with a triumphant ding from the microwave, and Raj made short work to transfer the popcorn to somewhere less scalding. The final familiar bars of the television’s tune echoed through the apartment walls, but the gentlecat was able to hear the last few poppy chords properly once he entered the living room. Bright characters on screen warped into existence across a blue backdrop, the title illegible to most but accompanied by subtitles “Moonlit Star Princess: Light Wings Reborn” just below. Raj wondered why the series never localized the title graphics, but he did not want to get into that discussion with the rest of the audience that evening.
“See, Evan, I told you I’d make it in time,” he mewled with a warm smile.
“Barely, Raj. You like my rendition of the tune?” the tigress grinned and shifted herself to the side to give him room to sit on the couch.
“I’d call the company for you to get a job there, but I have a feeling they would want you to move to their offices...and that’d leave me with the cubs,”
“Oh, I’d take the cubs and their big daddy with them!” she giggled and gently nuzzled his cheek once he was seated. “Just keep giving me popcorn and I’ll keep you around forever.”
The conversation ended sooner than Raj would have wanted, but the show continued without them. Evan purred warmly and kept her eyes on the television, and she leaned into Raj’s side to get comfortable. Raj smirked and shook his head gently, safely knowing she could not see him. It was not that he did not mind the anime they chose that evening, but Evan was on another playing field compared to him with this series. From the first time they met in Anime Club, Evan held onto Moonlit Star Princess like it was a family heirloom - a piece of her life that was worthless to some but priceless to her. Raj was not on either side of the spectrum, but he understood his girlfriend’s feelings. He, too, held plenty of poorly known shows in high esteem, if only from nostalgia. Having watched the previous series with his loving tiggy, he had some understanding for her mania, but his interest was far removed from her own. When a new series was announced, he knew she was going to have him watch it with her, and there was no turning back.
The timing of the reveal seemed to be a gift from a higher power, because mere days after the show's preview video went live, Evan revealed to him what would be the additional audience members for the evening. Her pregnancy having progressed since the anime’s reveal, Raj wondered in the back of his mind if she would go into labor the moment the final credits rolled. It was a silly expectation, but there would be a humorous symmetry to the whole ordeal if it came true.
Raj watched the white cheetah warrior leap through the stars, her nemesis having emerged with a battleship ready to destroy her and her friends’ world. The series tried to play on the nostalgia chords more than he would have liked, but Evan was eating it up, much like the popcorn that sat in his lap. Although she was mentally attached to the television, the shifting life within her middle made her instinctively rub at the exposed belly and grab a pawful of popcorn to munch. Evan did not seem to care if some kernels escaped her grasp, so long as she had some to devour in short order. The golden tigress gave a soft crunch to a bite of popcorn just as the cheetah performed a backflip in space, dodging a punch from a mechanical monster which proceeded to get crunched by another monster’s powerful jaws. The timing made the motherly nerdy tigress giggle to herself, and Raj could only smile wider at the sight.
In the back of his mind, however, he pondered - how would they be as parents, really? Evan was wonderful in so many ways, and her family was more supportive of their parenthood than he could have dreamed. His family was less receptive, however, and he could tell there was trepidation to their unexpected leap into making babies. With each passing week, his darling tigress grew larger with life, and the litter’s arrival became more real than before. He should be concerned, he should be worried, he should be planning for the worst. Right? They were young cats just barely out of college, and now they were bringing a litter to the world. He would be feeding more than just himself for once...and she would be, too. It was bizarre, much like the lion who transformed into a liontaur with three pairs of crystalline wings and a scorpion tail, but unlike the rising power levels on screen, the couple looked no stronger than they were the day they first met. It was a new challenge, but they would have to handle it the best they could.
Evan was not without her own concerns, too, but she seemed to be more like the anime’s protagonist more than Raj initially thought. No, the tigress could not leap from the planet’s surface into space and do a spinning kick through a spaceship’s force field in one fell swoop, but Evan seemed to hold onto the good things in life more than he did. She laughed at all the little issues they had, even though she had her lower moments. Her passion was immense in all that she loved, sometimes to his detriment - her cosplay wardrobe was a formidable obstacle these last few months, for one. And even with her chaotic love of anime, Raj knew that Evan loved her cubs just as much, if not more. Sure the living room was a bit unkempt, posters hung where they stood for so many anime shows they watched together, but the nursery was almost clinical in design, in contrast. He swore he could see it in a mother’s magazine and not be out of place. Four cribs were built in preparation, and the walls were decorated with murals of a wonderful breezy field. The room felt like it was from another house, and somehow his artistic anime fan of a lover found a way to get it in her apartment. And yet, at the same time, here she was devouring a whole bowl of popcorn in shorts and an undersized top, completely enthralled by the action of an animated action series starring a space-faring princess cheetah with high heels he could barely comprehend as combat-ready.
Having burst into the space fortress, the protagonist stopped in her tracks as a multitude of monsters lined the ship’s interior. One of the monsters - a demonic-looking rhino with two heads and a covered in swirled, glowing tattoos - held a small and whimpering lion cub who struggled in the brute’s grasp. Another monster, a snake-like beast with deer horns and six eyes, ensnared a masked tiger who squirmed and raised his paw toward the princess. Raj remembered both of these characters, though to describe their relationship to another person would best be a job for Evan. Another princess, this one a vixen, lay on the floor, struggling to stand as she grabbed hold of her arm. A large squirrel with robotic limbs placed a metallic foot against her back, forcing her to the ground with a desperate cry.
Raj could feel tension rise in the room. Evan’s stare grew more fixed onto the television, and her aim with popcorn grew less proficient. Her tail flicked about, as if she were about to pounce at the television and help her animated friends succeed. Thankfully, there was no need for the rounded tigress to move off the couch, as the hero began to give a strong, thought-provoking monologue to the monsters in the ship and their leader who listened from the bridge. She loved her friends with all her heart, and she could not watch them be taken and destroyed, no matter what they did. She was willing to go all the way to save them, even if she had to leave everything else behind. And as a rock tune erupted in the soundtrack, the cheetah took down the first few monsters in a frenzy. The music grew louder, and the tension held in Evan’s fluffed tail died down, replaced by a cheerful wiggling of her rump as she snuggled up against Raj’s side.
Raj lowered his paw down her back, letting her rest ever closer against him. Her body was still somewhat tense against his paw, but her demeanor was as cheerful as ever. She watched with excitement as each monster was taken out one by one, all to the strong pop tunes of victory. She started to lean ever closer to the television, taking up more of Raj’s periphery, and he decided to keep his eyes on her, relishing her reaction.
The cheetah space princess leapt into the air, and she shouted proud and in as powerful a cry as she could -
“I have to save my friends! Ultimate Moonlight Sword!~”
In the next three minute sequence, the world around the cheetah appeared to melt away, glowing purples and pinks surrounding the backdrop and pooling around her body. Her precious dress disintegrated, revealing some under garments or smaller dress to cover her otherwise naked form, and more rows of frills emerged from their ends until they created a long flowing cape and near kimono-style dress. The bow on the back of her head came off and opened wide to show a pair of angelic light wings to cling to her back, and the cheetah's spots all glowed bright around her. Her eyes sparkled as she spun upside-down in the purple space, and she unsheathed a luminescent blade from the air. Returning to her feet, an emblem of the moon appeared on her chest.
As she gave the final pose, the world returned around her, and she took aim at the menacing squirrel before her, eyes determined and smile wide.
“Yes! Show those monsters who’s the boss!” Evan mewled happily, one hand rubbing at her belly to calm her equally-ecstatic babies.
Raj could only smile and watch as his darling tiggy relished in what he felt was going to be the climax of the show. He could see the utter joy in Evan’s eyes - years of waiting for a new series and now months waiting for this transformation to finally come to fruition. He had seen that twinkle in her eyes before, that determined, proud and altogether cheerful sparkle. He saw it in her eyes when they finished painting the nursery, and again when they saw the little cubs kicking in the ultrasound just a few days ago. Sure, she was anxious about what was going to happen, but who isn’t when the time comes?
Evan was undergoing a transformation into her next form right before his eyes, and he could not wait to see what happened next.
