The first riftjump is a very important event in the development of any young titan.
Not only does it prove its abilities to navigate the treacherous currents of riftspace but also gives the body its final form.

With the immense amounts of ernergy, heat and radiation cursing through riftspace the only thing that prevents the ship from immediatly vaporizing is the ability of kaydar to act as an giant heatsink, absorbing all energy that hits it, storing it in its structure.
During this first flight, the burn in, the kaydar structure shifts to cope with the new cirmumstances ad stops its natural growth.
An effect that persists up to a year after each jump.

The distance each titan can archieve with a single jump is determined by the amount of energy it can absorb before it has to drop out into normal space again and dissipate.
Processing power and reaction speed of the kaydar gets lower and lower the more of its structure has to be used to store energy, making max range jumps a dangerous undertaking as the conciousness of the titan shuts down more and more.
But even within the safetly limits falling back into normal space the ship is very disoriented and dazed by the effects until temperature drops.

To minimize these effects and archieve rapid cooling the energy is focussed into parts of an internal mass storage, vaorizing it, turning it into an overheated plasma that is then expelled through various vents along the hull.

This glowing plasma is cought along the titans gravcores fieldlines forming these "wings" as the ship cools down.
Individual for each ship and field configuration.
While always there they can only be seen by the naked eye during this cooldown phase.
