Balling bare-pawed is common for kids and streetballers. But when Buck Hopper entered the 2004 FBA Draft, playing without shoes was considered ridiculous in the pros. It's not that no one had ever done it-- there were always a few players who would play barefoot-- just no one of any real significance had ever done it. So when B-Hop proudly told the reporters "shoes just slow down my crossover", most figured the bunny would either fail at the pros or finally slip on a pair of kicks.
1 MVP, 2 #1 seasons, and 6 playoff appearances later, now there's lots of FBA players who "Refuse the Shoes".

1) Dat Mongoste played basketball bare-pawed before entering the FBA. When he first went pro, he wore shoes. And when B-Hop made going bare-pawed more acceptable, he went back to losing the kicks.
That's my idea for a lot of the older players who go bare-pawed now. It's not that there was ever a rule about it-- the FBA has always permitted barefoot players. It's just that the fad at the time was for all pro ballers to wear shoes. No doubt part of that was driven by getting lucrative contracts to market shoes, like NBA players do!
B-Hop just made it more acceptable for FBA players to go bare-pawed. Guys like Dat Mongoste and Kwaku Bbwaddene have always preferred playing barefoot, but they wore shoes when they started because it was just what you did. Now, they've gone back to playing the way they like.
2) Probably not, because Wald was their first round pick and really, the only one the reporters were looking at. Late picks like Cheeto Wolfote and Michael Honorable didn't get the press, and there's always been bare-pawed players among the low-interest ballers.
Of course, if they had known what Cheetopup and Dances With Wolves would eventually become....!
