Colour & the Sound
Now fans of the group have taken to calling you Colour, after the band's name. Is that the name you prefer? Or perhaps Edwin? Eddie?
Edwin would be best, I think.
Edwin it is. Now first off, I have to ask, we see you on stage or in your videos in the makeup, in the dark colors, the costume...it's made a star of you quite frankly so I have to ask, is that the real you? All the time? Is that you?
Not...really, no.
So who is the real Edwin Kedward?
I um...I don't know. Somebody a lot less interesting than who you're looking to talk to, I would think.
Perhaps I should ask, how do you spend your time when not on stage, when not performing, what do you do?
Well, I...stay home, when I can. Or in the hotel. Read, perhaps.
I admit, the people might be looking for, you know, maybe a dabble in the occult or something ritualistic to go with your dark brand of music.
...
Well speaking of the music, you're known for your very unique singing voice, much more powerful with more baritone than most would expect of your species, although to hear you now, you sound quite average, so where does that voice come from, that passion?
I um, well...to be honest it's not how I would have done it to begin with. It started as kind of a...well, something of a piss take in the studio when they were incessant about, you know, can you go lower, what if you tried this, and that...we were just messing around with different sounds and I did that as kind of a joke and...I guess it took.
Would that be your preferred method of singing?
It...works, for some songs. Maybe not as much others. But people come to expect it. If I think it needs it, I've performed some songs in my regular singing voice.
And how do people like that?
A lot of times they think it's Lester or one of the other boys.
If you don't mind me asking, it'd been remarked on before that the shift in the tone of your music may have coincided with what was going on in your personal life at the time. Do you care to share any insight on that?
I'm not sure what there is to tell.
Well, there are a lot of themes of betrayal, themes of deceit, perhaps somebody you felt had wronged you or perhaps you had wronged?
Closer to the for...well, I would...it's the kinds of things everybody goes through.
But you would say the themes and whatever else are inspired by that, then?
Well, Lester writes most of the songs.
So the dark, brooding character in the outlandish dressing is not...it's not you, as you say, so why would you say you feel compelled to portray yourself in this way as you perform?
I...suppose that in regard to the performance, people expect a show, expect spectacle...I think they expect something much more than I am. I don't think they would have much to cheer about or throw a few quid at if they just got me. It's my responsibility to provide for them a character they can be intrigued by. Somebody who can perform adequately.
But isn't it you behind the facepaint and the straps and whatever else?
I don't know. I usually prefer not to think too much about it at the time.
Well, as many know, Colour & The Sound is actually your second, you know, your second act that you've performed with. I was wondering if we could talk a little bit about your former grou -
I would rather not.
No?
That's a...different body of work. Some would argue that it had very little to do with me. I certainly would.
Is that why you exited the group, perhaps? Did you feel you could contribute more?
I'm doing something closer to what I want, now.
Some have mentioned that you, rather curiously, don't incorporate much dance into your act now, like you did with -
That was a dancing group. It was about...that's what it was about. Colour is about music. Creativity.
Would that speak to the extent with your grievances?
As I said, I would rather leave that lie.
Well, I think most would agree that you've certainly proven to be much more than the background character as some might have perceived you, what with your group taking the world by storm with this latest album and those that proceeded it.
As I said, Lester writes most of the music.
Heh well, perhaps we should be interviewing him!
I asked, but you insisted that it be me.
Edwin would be best, I think.
