Sometimes Zero can shows signs of being happy. It doesn't happen very often but it can happen. Just be careful because he's still a large predator with an uncontrollable feral instinct that's hard to ignore. Even if he used to seem friendly in the past things can change on the fly.

I have a very basic technique when handling large predators, based off actual rehab techniques.
I bring them a gift of food, enough to thoroughly stuff them. That not only cools their predator instincts it makes them very logy and relaxed. THEN they get the tummyrubs. And from that point on, they associate me with a) food, and b) tummyrubs.
Zero's smarter than the average bear, but he's still a basic carnivore and I'd be happy to help him!

That might determine on his mindset too. Sometimes he acts out not just because of hunger but because it's in his genes. Jurassic World explained that I-Rexes sometimes kill for fun. A instinct that's hard to surpress most times. He tries his best to though.
