Memorial Day: For Those Who Served (NAS Waco, TX, WWII)
In memory of those warriors past of all nations who fought and died for what they held dear...
We always remember.
(My uncle, Philip Marmelstein, 3rd from right. Uncle Philip went on to be one of the first pilots for the Israeli Air Force, ferrying Czech-built Messerschmitts for the IAF and flying refugees into Israel as part of Operation Magic Carpet. Now in his 80s, he has announced that he intends to see his 101st birthday. I think he's just the guy to pull it off, too.)

Thats is amazing man.
That reminds me of my great uncle Charles "Chub" Hatton. He was a B-17 Waist gunner and got shot down. He was part of the death march along the baltic sea from one luft camp to another.
Also my Great Grandfather Sharp was on the USS St. Lo. Caught sharpnel from the A6M Zreo that hit the Carrier. Got the Presedential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart. He was alos on the USS Bunker Hill when it was hit by a kamikaze.

I'm sure he's got some great stories to tell. That's some significant service with Magic Carpet. As you say, it's usually guys like that who make it to the age they pick. The world seems to fall in with their way of thinking rather than the other way around.
I'll be visiting in-laws with my wife down in Waco after AC. I've always meant to check and see if any WWII buildings or infrastructure still exist at Waco Airport.

Apparently the Heinkel bomber engine in the 199 also caused the damned things to have a truly evil torque!
I SO want to do a large scale Me 109 with Israeli markings!
"Spitfires over Israel" has some great Messerschmitt moments in it. The fuel intake is benhind the exhaust stacks. Apparently if you refuel them swiftly with cans, there can be enough slop-over of fluel on the wing roots to be set alight by the exhaust if you start up and taxi merrily along. Half the time the ground crew were not waving you heroically off on your way, they were frantically trying to flag you down so they could put out the flames....

I would cherish knowing him and then we would sit and talk for hours and I would record all of it - especially concerning his time flying the 109. I heard an interesting story concerning this - an ironic twist - that during one of their first wars the Israeli B-17's were escorted by 109's.
