A lot of people wonder what it's like to have a unicorn. If you're reading this, you're obviously a fan of unicorns. But having a unicorn is much more than just riding it and cliche stereotypical girly thoughts with rainbows and glitter. Having a friend that is as magical as a unicorn can make life easier and better.
Though sadly, it's very likely that unicorns don't exist in our world. But what about in a world where magic exists?
Not only does this story show what life would be like with a unicorn, it shows how much one friend can make life better. And that true love, can happen.
It begins on a normal day, where normal boy, is about to get, a 'not so' normal life.
The Unicorn
This story begins with a family of three, the Walker family. They were like any normal family. With a mother of two. And I'll introduce you to them so you'll get familiar with them.
The mother, Carrie. She is a school librarian that loves to read to children just like her co-librarian, and she does her very best to care for her own.
The daughter, Sammi. She's not like any nine year olds you'd know in media or real life. Sure she loves kids shows, but she also likes shows meant for older audiences, like shows that her mother likes and gaming videos. And she loves making new friends.
And the son, also the main protagonist of this story, Max. He is like his sister, and yet kind of the opposite. He's not like most fifteen year olds, he enjoys kids shows, that's kind of a thing with people who have autism. And he tries to act like his younger sister! Trying to make friends and wants to hang out with them.
Now, you're probably wondering if this family has a father, well, it did. The father, Larry, sadly was no longer with them, but not from divorce, a more tragic way, and Max knows why.
This chapter begins with them visiting their grandparents who lived in a small estate that was in a forest like neighborhood that normally had mansions with millionaires. And one house was the home of the grandmother of Max's friend whose deceased husband was a good friend of Max's grandfather, he even helped them build their house.
While Carrie was talking to her parents, Max and Sammi were in another room, watching TV. Max then felt depressed as he remembered what happened to his dad.
Three months ago, Max and his father were at a mall for some father and son bonding time. It was going great, until when they were about to go home. Larry was getting the car ready, while Max went to use the restroom, when he came to the car, he saw a masked man holding a knife, then the stranger ran into a black car, and he saw paramedics tending to his father,..... with blood stains on his shirt.
Despite witnessing his father's murder, it only took two and a half months for him to be mostly happy, happy enough to make his mom and sister relieved and enough to have fun with his friends. But he was still depressed and his mother knew it.
Sure, the insurance money helped with their financial issues, but no amount of money could replace the happiness that Larry gave to his family.
Carrie walked in the other room to see how her children are doing. She realized Max's facial expression. (Emily Blunt's American voice) "Max? You look bored. Why don't you go to Peggy's and sit on the porch swing near the creek? It's what I did when I was bored as a kid."
Max, (Tom Holland's American voice) stood up. "Ok. It's about time I get outside."
"Just be careful." Carrie said.
"Don't worry, I learned my lesson." Max raised his arm showing that it was wrapped in bandages.
"So did I." Sammi raised her hand showing a flower bandaid.
To make the injury story short, the two learned a valuable lesson. Never try to scare away a squirrel with a broom.
He walked out of the house and to where his mother was talking about. To another house that was home of a friend of his grandparents who know him, so she would be okay with him being near the creek that was in her property.
He sat a porch like swing near the creek. Seconds later, he pulled out from his pocket, a tablet. He and Sammi got one as a Christmas gift that Larry suggested, and was inspired by one of Max's friends who has one.
He opened his email app to watch a video.
On the screen of his tablet, he watched a video of a young looking man in a classroom. (Chris Evan's voice) "Hello, I'm Dr Philip. The new mythology teacher of your school. Normally, I'm not planning on doing these kind of videos for all my students, but since you're Special Ed, I want you to have a special first treatment. I was once in Special Ed, so I know what to do to make you comfortable. And between you and me, I'm not officially a teacher. I do work at the school, and after two years of being the best tutor, teachers aid, and even custodian, the principal is allowing me to be In charge of this class. In this class, I can teach you all about mythology. Such as the real story of Hercules, the inspiration of Percy Jackson, and if you're a comic book fan, Norse mythology. Get to know the real mjonir. And that's not all, I can also squeeze in other types of mythology. Mythical creatures such a dragons, trolls, and unicorns. So for extra credit, let's hope your a fan of fairytales. See you real soon." The video ended.
Max thought that he already knew who he was since he met him earlier that day, and thought that he looked just like a guy who spoke at his father's funeral, as a guy who said he was best friends with him, and even visiting his family a few times. He put his tablet down and watched the creek.
While listening to the sound of the running creek, he was thinking of what he would have done to prevent the tragic event that happened to his father.
Three minutes later, he felt something, he looked to his left, and suddenly had a powerful urge to explore the creek like he was as a child. He stood up and walked away from the swing, leaving his tablet behind.
While he was walking, he was feeling the nostalgia of exploring like he constantly did at a young age. He thought it was going normal, then he slipped. "WOAH!" He then slid down a hill! At the bottom of the muddy hill, he was out cold for no apparent reason.
—
Back in the house, Carrie was talking to her parents.
Her father (Michael Douglas's voice) started the conversation. "So, have you told them?"
Carrie looked depressed. "No, not yet."
Her mother spoke. (Allison Janney's voice) "Eventually you'll have to tell them. It'll be that noticeable soon."
"It's just, Max has enough guilt, it's a mother's instinct to know that."
"Do you blame him for what happened?"
"No!, of course not!"
"Then there's no reason to be this stressed." He said.
"I. just, wish there was something that can help me with this! I can't go through this alone! It would take a miracle to help me with this."
—
Max started to wake up. He stood up with his back all muddy. He then noticed eerie fog. At first he just wanted to walk away. But he suddenly felt something in his chest, and heard and eerie yet soothing voice.
". . . . max . . . . ."
He blinked. "Hello?"
". . . . max . . . . ."
"Who's there?" He became worried. "If this is a prank, knock it off!" He started to walk away.
". . . . max . . . . ."
"Alright!" He walked towards the path. "I'll play along! But it you scare me, I'm gonna be so mad!" Before he went in the wall of fog, he picked up a stick from the ground.
He walked into the mist. Ten seconds later, he was completely blinded by fog and was worried that something might tackle him. Moments later, he felt a head rush and the fog cleared to reveal a dirt path with trees on the sides. He turned around to see that the fog and the scenery he came from was gone! He then continued to walk down the path mumbling to himself. "Who ever is pranking me really went all out."
A minute of walking later, he saw the exit of the tree path.
Once out of the tree path, he was standing in front of a pond with the clearest water you can imagine. He was amazed at how clean a pond can be.
He then heard something, it sounded like heavenly humming. He turned his head to where the sound came from and looked alert. "Hello?" He was looking at a fog bank. He then heard distant foot steps. "Somebody there?!"
He then saw something in the fog and became worried! And in the eerie mist, he saw something coming towards him! He knew that something coming out of got was never usually good. "Whoever or. . . WHATever you are, I've seen enough movies to know how use this as a weapon!" He held the stick like a weapon! Despite the pain his bandaged arm was feeling.
The thing in the fog and was coming closer and Max was prepared to fight back, defend himself, and to be scared! He heard dramatic music that you hear in movies that prepared you for a jump scare of something suspenseful.
The thing was close enough to realize what it was, a silhouette of a horse. Max was confused. "Is that a... horse?" It partly came out of the fog, confirming his theory that was a horse. He was now holding the stick with one hand and the one with bandages patting his leg. "Hey, horsie, what are doing out here?"
Once the horse was completely out of the mist, it revealed that it was all white. It got closer and Max realized that it was skinnier than a horse normally should be. "You. . . look like you just escaped a farm that starved you. I don't have any hay with me, but," He crouched down and pulled out some long grass from the ground and held out his hand towards the horse. "here. You look hungry."
The horse got closer, leaned its head to Max's hand with the grass and started eating the grass. Max smiled as the wild animal was eating out of his hand like a petting zoo. He then realized something very strange about the horse, the one inch of the line of the ends of its white mane had rainbow colors. He then looked into the horses eyes, they were light blue with long eyelashes, they looked feminine, confirming to Max that It was a female. He noticed that her tail didn't look like a horse tail at all, it looked more like the tail of a zebra or lion. He then noticed that her forehead had something on it, a foot long skinny cone like item, it looked like a horn. All of those descriptions were signs that it looked like a unicorn! Max blinked. Then he said. "You.... look like someone dressed you up as a unicorn as a sick joke." He was thinking of trying to remove the fake horn but decided not to.
Once the mare was done with her snack, Max wiped the tiny pieces of grass on his shirt. "I'm more depressed then I thought, I'm talking to a horse that looks like a unicorn."
The mare spoke with a soft voice! (Kristen Bell's voice) "First off, thank you for the offering. Second, I did not lure you here so you can deny what I am, I lured you here because you are in need of me." She gestured to herself with her hoof. "Now, put down the stick, and let's go to your mother."
Max with an emotionless face, dropped the stick. "Did. You just. Talk!?"
"Well, yes I did. Did you not know that unicorns could talk?"
"What!? Unicorn?! But. . . You're a horse just dressed as a unicorn! And I'm imagining you talking!"
The unicorn smiled. "Do horses have hooves of this shape?" She lifted her leg, twisted her wrist/ankle to show that the bottom of her light grey hooves. They were not like normal horse hooves, they looked like cartoon hearts. The pointy bottom of a cartoon heart facing him and the two curves facing the horse. And just like a normal horse hoof, it had a line in the middle.
"You're... You're a hallucination! If I touch you, you're not there!" He raised his hand and touched her neck. To feel an actual horse neck.
"Now, shall we go to your mother so we can get ready to go home?"
Max realized what she said. "wait wait wait, hold on! You just wanna be my pet unicorn!?! I don't know if you're real or not!!"
The unicorn looked offended. "Pet, is a little offensive."
"Sorry." He felt realization and walked around ranting. "I get it! I hit my head. I hit my head when I slipped down that hill. And this is all a dream! In reality, I'm lying in that mud. And that video of my mythology teacher gave me a dream where I meet a unicorn." He made a tee pose and felt a sharp pain in his bandaged arm, he groaned in pain, and held his arm.
The unicorn noticed his right arm was bandaged up. She started walking to him. Max noticed.
"Right, I'm just gonna walk away." He tried to, but he couldn't, he looked down at his feet, and tried to move them again to no avail. It felt like his feet were glued to the ground.
Her head leaned in closer to him, making him nervous. She leaned in closer to his arm. And kissed it, just like a human would. His arm then glowed white through the bandages! When his arm stopped glowing, he wiggled his fingers and didn't feel pain. He unwrapped the bandages revealing his arm with no sign of squirrel mauling!
Max was amazed. "Okay, I have no idea what those doctors got me on, might be LSD or another drug I don't know the name of. I'm probably in a hospital bed by now! Any second now I'll wake up with a doctor shining a bright flash light in my eyes!" He closed his eyes. And five seconds later, he opened them. Only to see the unicorn still there. He closed eyes again and waited ten seconds, opened his eyes, she was still there. Then he closed his eyes as tight as he could, twenty seconds later, she was still there.
"Clearly closing my eyes isn't enough." He walked to the pond and got on his knees. He turned to her. "Goodbye, I'll remember you in therapy." He then splashed his face with the water. Ten seconds later, he raised his head all soaked, he turned around, and saw that she was still there. Then dunked his head in the water again, He kept like that until he was out of air. He dramatically raised his head with water splashing behind him. When he caught his breath, he turned around and the unicorn . . . . was still there.
The unicorn looked bored with half closed eyes. "Are you done?" She asked.
He spat out water in his mouth, not like a spit take, more like a fancy fountain. Then slapped himself in the face. "Yeah. I'm done."
"Shall we get going to your mother?"
Max got an idea. "Yes. We should!" He started walking to the place where he came in. The unicorn followed. He then tried walk a little faster. Then he noticed the trees weren't moving like they should. He felt like he was walking in place. He looked down to see that he was floating! He turned his head to the unicorn to see that her horn was glowing with sparkles.
"I may have four legs, but can you slow down?"
Max was lowered back to the ground. And they continued walking at the same speed.
She noticed that the boy looked stressed. "I can make your life ten times better then it is now."
He turned to her with hand gestures. "Could you. . . stop talking for now!? I wanna... ponder what's going on!" Half a minute of silence later, he turned to her again. "How. can you make my life easier?"
She smiled with her horse lips. "More ways than you need."
After going in the path where he came from, again, he felt a head rush and was back at the muddy hill he slid from. Max got an idea. After walking to the creek swing, he grabbed his tablet that he left behind.
"Miss unicorn? I wanna take a picture of you. I wanna reminder of the day I met my unicorn." The Unicorn smiled and made a pose. "Smile!" He then took a picture with a camera click sound from the tablet. He looked at the screen to see. . . A picture of the unicorn.
Once they were in the yard of his grandparents home, he got another idea. "Okay, my mom might not react so good if you want to live with us, so, you. . . wait here, while I'll try to convince her." The Unicorn agreed and stayed put while Max ran to the sliding glass door.
Max walked in acting kind of historical. "Everyone! Everyone."
Carrie then saw that her son was covered in mud and his hair was set and dripping. "Max, you're filthy! And why is your arm not bandaged?"
"That doesn't matter now! Just, look out the window! Look outside." He pointed to the sliding glass window.
Everyone was worried about his behavior but got up from their seats and looked out the window to see, nothing. Max looked out the window too. He too saw nothing. He sighed in relief, and turned around to see. . . . . . The unicorn in the house. He yelped in shock.
Everyone was startled by the random noise, and turned around to see a Unicorn smiling. "Sometimes I just have fun with teleportation spells!"
The three adults were shocked by the sight of a horse, they were even more shocked when the horse spoke, and their eyes widened when she fully saw what the horse really was.
"I see you made a friend." Grandma said.
Max looked at his grandparents and mother and recognized their facial expressions. "You're not reacting like I am? It's a unicorn!"
"And consider it a pleasure to be in my presence." The horse like stranger said.
Sammi walked in the room, and looked at the house guest. "Woah!" She said.
Max noticed his sister and walked to her. "Sam, sis, you're with me, right? What do you think of her!?"
"I don't know if she's real or not, but that's cool!"
"Pull out your left hand and I shall prove that I am real." The Unicorn said as Sammi did that. The unicorn leaned in closer and kissed her hand. Everyone was confused by the gesture, then Sammi's started glowing. When it stopped glowing, she spoke up. "Now, remove the bandaid." She did just that to show everyone no small squirrel gash.
"Ok, now I'm impressed." Sammi said.
"Oh, I get it, when I hit my head, I got dailey amnesia. And you're acting like it's the day I hit my head, just like that Adam Sandler movie I can't remember the name of! See? Amnesia! So when the unicorn prop lifts that bowl of candy on the coffee table, I'll feel a wire."
The unicorns horn glowed and that said bowl of candy started floating. Max waved his hand above it, to feel no wire. He waved his hand under it to feel nothing again. He then waved his hands all around it to feel nothing at all. No stick, no string, no wire! He then pushed the bowl down an inch and when he let go, it lifted up again. It then waved around as if the unicorn was showing off. "I'm gonna throw up!"
Carrie panicked. "No! Do everyone in this house a favor, and don't. You're already dripping water and mud."
The unicorn spoke. "Allow me, ma'am." She then touched Maxes back with her horn and the mud blew away like dust, and Max was suddenly clean and dry. "Now that that is done, I wish to live with you, your son is in need of my friendship." She gestured to herself with her hoof.
Carrie realized what she said. "Wait, you just want to live in my house!?"
Her father spoke up. "Well, better than the squirrel."
Max heard him. "You got me there."
Grandma spoke up. "Well you did beg us to keep that rabbit."
Carrie thought for a moment. "That was different, my precious bunny was way smaller than her! Am I seriously gonna let him keep her?"
"We kept Eric." Grandpa said.
"Oh!" Carrie bursted into laughter. "Kept! Eric!! That's PRICELESS!!!" She was holding her stomach from laughing. Max was confused about the joke of his uncle. She then calmed down. "Alright. But I don't know how you're going to fit in the car, or where you're going to sleep."
"No need." The unicorn raised her hoof. "I can gallop along side your 'motorized carriage', and I can sleep in what ever room has room."
Max was visibly confused as they were getting ready to go home. Grandpa walked to him. "Look on the bright side, there's a slight chance that she will turn human and you falling in love with her."
Max was then shocked. "Grandpa! What's with you and referencing movies!?" He smiled at his grandson.
They walked outside. Max realized something. "Hey, I'm pretty sure Sammi would want to ride you! It's tradition that a little girl rides a unicorn!" Sammi heard and was kinda interested.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but for other people to ride a unicorn, the main friend must be the first to ride me. And that's you!"
Max was shocked. "Well, alright." Max tried to mount her, but the unicorn used her magic to pick him up and place him on her back.
Carrie noticed what was going on. "Just stay near the car, and in the bike lane."
"No need to worry. I may not have a seatbelt, but my magic can keep him safe." Carrie was then relieved and went on the car.
"Just to let you know, I'm a little rusty, I haven't been pony ridding since I was five."
"And just to let YOU know, I have not let anyone ride me in about twenty years." The unicorn said.
Carrie then drove the car away with the unicorn following.
As the car drove through the small road on the estate, the unicorn pranced along side of it while Max was riding on her.
Max spoke up. "I realized something, I'm riding a unicorn. I'm living Cassie's dream from when she was in first grade." The car came from a small road to a big road with street lines and other cars, Max's eyes widened at the sight of all the other cars. Carrie's car became faster so did the unicorn. "WOAH!" Max tried not to fall off the mare by tightly yet gently grabbing her neck. And trying not to panic, sure he was familiar with riding a bike, but he didn't have a helmet, or a saddle. He knew that one slip could kill him. "I may not have my drivers license, and yet, I'm driving a unicorn on a busy street!"
While the unicorn reached high speed, Max's heart raced! And Carrie was thinking of what her parents said, all the while trying to to be distracted while driving.
When ever his mother drove to his grandparents, they took a freeway that was below ground and not like above free ways, but lucky for him, when they drive home, they take normal roads with traffic lights and crosswalks. Max spoke up. "How do I signal while holding on for dear life?!" In the middle of the ride, Carrie drove on an overpass that was above the freeway Max was relieved not to be on.
After about ten minutes of driving and galloping, and Max kind of panicking, they were finally home.
Max leapt off the unicorn and shivered. "Hoo, that was fun!" Max noticed that his neighbor was walking past the house. He walked to her. "Hey, excuse me, Mrs. Springer! You can see her, right? What do you think!?" He pointed to the unicorn.
Mrs. Springer looked surprised. "Impressive. You suddenly became a master at making friends." She walked away.
Max was surprised and confused. And he came up with a theory that since he was fifteen, people are pretending that's it's not a big deal so not to embarrass him. He walked to his sister. "Hey, Sam! How would you like to ride the unicorn? It's tradition that a girl your age ride a unicorn. Now that I rode her, you're legally allowed to ride her."
Sammi then felt a little excited. "Ok." She walked to the unicorn. And she understood what was going on and used her magic to lift her off the ground and onto her back.
Carrie noticed and became worried. "Just be careful!"
The unicorn heard and her horn glowed and a magic transparent helmet appeared on her head. Max's eyes widened and he got confused and thought that she would have done that for him. Carrie was relieved.
The unicorn went off and Carrie and Max went inside.
Max then started ranting. "How is no one reacting like I am!?! It's a real unicorn?!?"
Carrie started to comfort her son. "She did say you were in need of her friendship, that probably means she wants to help you with your life."
"We're just gonna keep her and I'm gonna call her my best friend?! I don't even know her name!!"
"Well, when they're done playing, you can ask her. And I'm planning on going to Crown Burger and get dinner, and I'm thinking about driving for a while so you can have time alone to bond with her and get to know each other, I'm even planning on bringing Sam so you can have some alone time with her."
(Authors Note~ Crown Burger is a Utah thing. Yeah, this takes place in utah)
"That's kind of clever."
"But I just drove about seven miles, I wanna rest for a bit." She sat on the couch in a lazy position. Max walked to another room to watch videos.
—
About eight minutes later, the unicorn and Sammi came inside.
"That was so much fun! I had no idea the neighborhood was like that."
"Yes, it was fun, and I am sure your neighbors who have heard your cheering think so."
A few seconds after entering the house, a black skinny cat was walking past, but when it spotted the unicorn, it stopped in its tracks. "Row!?" It meowed in such shock in its tone.
"Do not worry, I am not here to replace you."
"Aow Mowow?"
"To make the lives of this family better, especially the boy."
"Meer?"
"Yes, even you." She then walked down the staircase, which was amazing considering she was a horse like creature.
Iris found Max in his own room. He saw on his tv that he was watching a video about unicorns spotted in real life.
"Doing research to see if I am real, I see."
"I slapped myself over fifty times to just make sure I'm awake!"
The unicorn noticed that his cheeks were red from what he said. She walked to him and kissed both his cheeks, healing them. "I sense that your mother is going out to get dinner, let us spend the time we have along to start bonding." Max was nervous but went upstairs. And he was very amazed by her walking up the stairs with ease.
After Carrie explained her plan to Sammi, the unicorn and her son came in the room.
"With my magic, I know of your plan."
She stood up. "Ok. I'm going to Crown Burger. Max I know your favorite. Miss unicorn? What would you like?"
"Eating for me, is an option. I eat when I choose to, I sleep when I want to, I bath when I must, and I sweat only when I am utterly exhausted. But a salad shall suffice."
"Ok." The two girls left the house, leaving him alone with his new friend.
Max sat on the couch while the unicorn sat on the floor in front of him. He tried to think of a good way to start the first conversation with his new friend. "So.... What's your favorite show?"
"What ever pleases you."
"Okay, first topic of conversation as friends, what can you do to make my life easier?"
"I can manipulate your dreams so you can sleep peacefully without nightmares, I can manipulate your emotions so you will never feel stressed, and I can help you forget memories that you wish to forget."
Max realized something about her grammar. "Are you going to talk like very majestic like some old wizard?"
She then spoke in a slight Shakespearean accent and harpsichord music was heard. "If it pleases thou, I shall change the way speak to thy comfort. 'Tis what I live for."
Max was confused. "Maybe a different tone."
She then spoke with a snobby stereotypical teenage girl accent and phone ringtone sounds were heard. "So you like, want me to act your age so you can feel totes' chill? Because of what your face looks like, it's so obvi!"
"Different tone please!"
She spoke in a street talk accent and bongos and snaps were heard. "Yo! Yah gotta be chill if yah want more friends. Yah gotta be a cool cat ta hang with jo kind. And be the way yah wanna ta be the word on the street."
"Next?"
She spoke in a thick hillbilly accent and banjo music was heard. "Darn tootin' pardner? Ye're noh easy ta please. Ye're as stubborn as a rock with boots. There ain't no accent that can make all mah friends ok. I'm like a chameleon in an army clothes store."
"One I could understand?"
She then spoke in a Spanish accent and Spanish guitar music was heard. "¿Qué tal un idioma diferente? Con mi magia soy bastante buena. Ellas me enseñaron eso en la escuela unicornio."
"I have no idea what you said."
She giggled and spoke in her normal soft voice. "I'm kidding. I can talk just like you so you're comfortable."
He pointed. "That's good. I just realized something, this is an unusual way to start a friendship. I don't know your name! What is your name anyway?"
"I don't have a name currently, though I've had many names in my five hundred years of life."
Max was amazed by what she said. "You look great for someone your age! Now, about names."
"A unicorn is named by the main friend, thus, it is you who must name me."
His eyes widened when he heard what he has to do. But first thought, "'did she just say 'thus?"' And spoke for real. "Um, okay just give me time." He was then thinking of suitable names. He was trying to think of a non-awkward name.
"While I'm thinking of one, let's just keep talking. I just realized, I rode on a unicorn for several miles, and no one stopped to stare, were you like, magically disguised as a motorcycle and do you disguise yourself as a normal girl when you're in crowds?"
"I do not disguise such beauty." She looked up, posed, and sparkles spontaneously came. "I do however, cast a spell that allows me to walk through a crowd with ease, sure they do have a little amazement, but they have the same amount of amazement as if looking at a service dog. It acts as a shield for me."
"So, if it's a shield, this. . . 'shield thing' ... It protects you from being crowded by amazed people?
"Yes. If I were to lower the spell in public, all the people around me would be overwhelmed by my presence. And I would be overwhelmed by a crowd with cameras."
Max felt something. " 'Scuse me, I gotta use the bathroom." He stood up and went to the bathroom.
A minute later, while washing his hands, He thought for a moment, thinking of an appropriate name for his unicorn. He then spotted something in the mirror. He turned around to see his father's shampoo. He then felt depressed.
He left the bathroom and sat on the couch in front of the unnamed unicorn.
"Well, this is unusual. I never had to name one of my friends before. Nickname, sure. But, actual name." He groaned. "I'm in my sophomore year of high school, and I have to come up with a name for a unicorn. If I was five, I'd come up with Madam Glitter or Mrs. Sparkle."
"It's okay, all of my main friends, they were younger than your sister when I met them, and you are at the oldest age when I met a main friend. As a friend, I would like to help. I suggest a name that means 'rainbow.' Since my mane." She did a pose showing her luxurious hair.
"Ok." He picked up his tablet and Google searched that. On a website, it showed the same word five times, Max wasn't sure yet. He then remembered something. He ran back to the bathroom, and looked at his father's shampoo. He picked it up and looked at it. He then realized that what it said. 'Irish Spring', he covered the H with his thumb, he saw a word that made his face light up with a great idea. He thought for a second.
He walked back to the couch. "How 'bout, Iris?"
The unicorn's eyes widened in such surprise. "Hmm, Iris?"
"It means rainbow in a few other languages. And you said you wanted a name that means rainbow."
"Iris," She thought for a second, and Iris smiled. "I love it."
"Well, nice to meet you Iris. I'm Max."
"I already know your name."
"Okay. I just realized one flaw of having a unicorn in a high school, no offense but, it's kind of like wearing a bowtie at school. There's a big chance I'll get beaten up."
"There is also a spell for that. I can manipulate the emotions of others, so those who wish to harm you, simply will not. But if that doesn't work, I can protect you anyway."
"How? Can you stab people with your horn? I saw that on tv once."
"Well, no. But I do have friends who are protective to mortals, and they might act as bodyguards for you in the future. But for now, I will be your bodyguard."
"What do you mean by that?"
"It's pretty obvious. But I mean I shall protect you from harm."
"When you say 'bodyguard,' do you mean you'll fight who ever wants to hurt me?" She nodded. "I always thought unicorns were peaceful."
"They are. They can also be dangerous."
"Prove it. Show me you can be dangerous."
She smiled and turned her head to her left. Her horn glowed, and from the very tip of it, with a pew sound effect, a glowing sparkly blur came from it. And hit a tissue box, and it immediately exploded and tiny shreds of tissue paper and glitter like stuff floated around near the remains.
"So, what do you call that sailor moon move?"
"That was a sparkle ball. A unicorns most trusted weapon. It can either stun an enemy or knock out a criminal."
Max was then curious about his new friends thing that he doesn't have and reached out to touch it. "How does that thing wor-" His hand suddenly shot up in the air like an impatient student in a class room with a question.
Iris' horn was glowing. "Since we're friends, let's set some ground rules. Don't. Touch. The horn!"
"Why not?" He struggled to put his arm down. "Is it that people are jealous that they don't have a magic appendage?"
"No, it's like a private thing. It's more like this. Imagine a woman's chest,"
Max interrupted and featured her to stop talking. "POINT. . .made! No touchy the horn. But now that you told me not to, I might be tempted to touch it one day."
They then heard the sound of the door opening. Max looked at his mother and sister who walked into the room with dinner and paper plates.
"So if you're wondering why you're not freaking out, it's because Iris manipulated your emotions."
Carrie looked at the unicorn. "Is that your name?"
"Yes it is." Carrie was then awestruck by the shredded tissues and cardboard. "Oh, sorry." Her horn glowed and the tissue box was then restored.
Carrie sat in the couch and gave Max his meal of a burger and fries on a paper plate, gave Iris her salad, and Sammi sat on the floor with her corndogs and fries.
"So," Carrie said, "Tell us about yourself, miss Iris."
Iris began. "Well, as you can see, I'm a unicorn. And it is a fact that a unicorns purpose is to be a companion to someone in critical need of a friend. And your, 'child' was in need of my friendship."
"So you want to live with us because my kid was depressed?"
"Yes, and of all the friends I have had in hundreds of years, he is at the oldest age when he needed me. And it's not just him, some of his friends and you are too in need of me. His current friends and his friends he will meet in the future. I can help you all with your problems." She looked at Sammi. "Sammi? I can sense that you are struggling, I can help you how ever you'd like."
Sammi thought of somthing. "So that magic thing you use to manipulate emotions, it sounds very useful if you get bullied at school."
"Well, yes. It is very useful, in fact, it's never wise to enrage a unicorn. Or it could lead to deadly consequences. Along with that, I can manipulate people's emotions so you won't harm people or yourself."
Max thought that that feature could be useful.
Carrie realized another thing. "So, since your being a friend to my son and daughter, is there anyway you can be a friend to me?"
"I can help you cook and clean, help you find a lover in the future, and I can help you with your current problem."
Carrie's face lit up with such surprise. "Really!?"
She nodded. "In fact, I'll do it now." Her horn glowed. Sammi and Max both felt woozy. Once their vision cleared, they were both confused. "In case you are wondering, I made you forget a memory that she wishes you to forget."
"What was it about?" Max asked.
"Exactly." She smiled as she magically put some of the salad in her mouth.
Max and Sammi were wondering what it was, but thought that that memory was really embarrassing to have a unicorn make them forget.
Max too realized something about what she said earlier. "If your gonna be my best friend, does that mean your gonna come with wherever I go?"
"Well, yes. Since I'm a unicorn, you can ride me wherever you want to go. And with my magic, I can help your other friends with their lives."
"Well, if you're gonna be my personal 'little lamb', I'm gonna have to train you to sit in a car."
"Sounds uncomfortable, but if that is what you want."
After swallowing a bite of his burger, Max realized something. "But if you're gonna come with me to school, could you come with Sammi to her school tomorrow?" Everyone was wondering about what he said, he noticed. "Unicorns are popular with people her age. And I think that would be a good test for your 'shield thing', if it works for a bunch of 9 year olds, it will work for a bunch of people my age. And about what you said about your magic, the group that she hangs out with is," He made a thinking facial expression ".. what's the word I'm looking for? Racially? no... Mixed?"
"Diverse?"
"Diverse?" Both Carrie and Iris said at the same time. They both looked at each other.
"It's just, sometimes groups like that are attacked "
Iris thought for a moment and turned to Sammi. "I accept to go to school with you tomorrow. You too are in need of my friendship." Sammi smiled. As she took a bite of her corn dog.
Max looked at his sister and mother. "Everyone is completely okay with having a unicorn living in the house!? I have a hundred questions for her!" He turned to Iris. "Can you help me with my homework? Can you help my friend Jason with his social anxiety? Can you solve my dad's murder?"
"For all three questions, yes."
"That's just a few of all the questions I have for you! How much do the movie theaters charge for a unicorn? How are my friends gonna react to you? Can you turn lead into gold? Can you poop rainbows and glitter?!" Everyone was extremely shocked by the last question. Max became embarrassed for he realized it. "I am so sorry, I have no idea why I said that."
Iris smiled. "Since I'm a unicorn, I should expect people to ask those kinds of questions."
-
After eight minutes of asking her questions, they were done with dinner.
"So, what shall we do tonight?" Iris asked.
Max thought of something. "We could watch a movie."
"Oh, I haven't watched a movie in a while."
He walked to a DVD shelf, pulled out a DVD box, walked to the Blu-Ray player, and put it in. Everyone was wondering what the movie was. Until the tv revealed that it was Disney's Hercules. Max made an announcement. "Since I have a mythical creature as a friend, I thought I'd put in a movie full of 'em." Everyone thought it was a great idea.
Iris had a lot of things to say about the movie. "A centar is not blue! When one hydra head is cut off, only two grow back, not three! A cyclops wears more the a small loincloth!" Just to list a few.
-
Once the movie was over, everyone stretched and yawned. "So, you said you can sleep in what ever room has room." Carrie said, "We don't have a guest room, but, we have this." She then bent down to the couch and she pulled out a sofa bed.
Iris was amazed by the 'magic furniture.' "That will work." She climbed into the bed. "Much softer than a pile of leaves."
She noticed the cat jump on the bed. "Mow meeaw.
"Yes, this is where I sleep."
Max witnessed her bilingualism. "That feature could help with my friend Jason." He went to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
He walked out of the bathroom, Iris noticed him. "Max! May you have great dreams tonight!"
Max was thinking of something to say. "Um, thanks. You too. Good night." When Max got in his room, he laid on his bed. As he was trying to go to sleep, he was watching videos on his tablet, videos of animated shorts of unicorns. When he finally got very tired, he had so many thoughts in his mind, thoughts about having a unicorn for a friend could be awesome. And yet, in public, it could be a little awkward, but he remembered her 'shield thing.' He then fell asleep. Thinking of what might happen with his life.

After a year and a half, I made the first chapter better. I kinda find the first chapter of my story a little embarrassing, they just accepted a unicorn in their lives, but this version is more realistic and humorous.
Consider the first version of this the non-cannon pilot and this the cannon version.
I'm also planning to do other changes for all chapters. Such as the introduction of Sammi's friends, the schedule of Dr Phillips class, and the name of Mckenzie's father.
