Tekahn, just after patrolling his territory sits down, looks up at the sky and breathes in deeply. No threats to kin and kingdom today.
After an afternoon of showers the sun has broken through the clouds and a mist slowly rises from the water-soaked greenery. He seemed to revel in the moment...taking it all in during a period of uninterrupted bliss, of silent serenity, of sights and smells awash with life.
As his lungs filled with air, his eyes closed...he gave off an aura of happiness. This tiger was indeed experiencing that pleasant emotion that we all do. For him, all was right in the world.
After snapping the photo, I took my eyes off the camera and simply watched. I recalled all that had happened that day... the people I had met, the changing weather, the different animals, the sights and even smells. I breathed in as well and took in the scent of rain as it lay shining on the plants exposed to a setting sun. It was then that felt what the tiger was feeling.
At no point during the day had I any worries. It seemed that within the confines of this zoo, with friends of different species big and small, with mother nature setting such a wonderful scene...indeed, all was right in the world. At that moment I felt nothing but untainted, uninterrupted, pure, wonderful bliss and serenity...something that I had not felt in a very long time. Everything seemed perfect...there simply was nothing else.
Though such moments do not last they help make life worth living. Life is beautiful. Life is sublime...
...Life is wonderful.

Tigers are the largest of the big cats and are exclusively found in Asia from India to Vietnam, from Indonesia to the Russian Far East. The tiger can be divided into 9 subspecies: 4 are currently critically endangered and 3 are already extinct. Though estimations of tiger populations only a few years ago was 5,500-6,000, today populations are likely closer to 3,500 and are still declining. Dramatic declines of the tiger in India, thought to host the majority of the world’s tigers, have fallen to less than 1,411. Overall, the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in tiger habitat, which now represents a mere 7% of its historic range. Poaching is a significant problem throughout the tiger’s range, the demand for its body parts in traditional medicines, tonics, and exotic dishes driving a lucrative trade that is wiping out entire populations. Long-term threats include habitat fragmentation and prey depletion, which is accelerating the tiger’s demise and subsequently reducing the long-term genetic viability of many populations.
If you want to help, the best for you to do is to educate yourself (http://www.savethetigerfund.org), never buy products made from tigers or endangered species (http://www.wildaid.org), and tell others. Contact me for more information.
