Here is a shot of me preparing my Horse, Cally, for some riding. She is an Oldenburger breed, about 16.4 hands tall, and she just turned 20 years old this February. I've had her since she was an 8 year old mare. The stable you see in the background has been her home for the past 7 years.
I'm preparing the girth of the saddle in the photo. Generally, you keep the girth slightly loose when you're preparing to ride, walk her into the arena, then tighten it down about one or two notches. Then you're ready to ride. The saddle is a German made Kieffer. Its a Jumping/Dressage combination saddle.

1 hand is about 10 centimeters. So 16.4 is 164cm to her withers. I don't like to round when I'm talking height, but I do embellish a bit. I've sometimes described myself as being 4'14" tall, it sounds greater then just 5'2.
The saddle is a Kieffer Achen AT. Getting pretty old, about 16 years now, but still great condition and near perfect fit.

Theres a horse boarded at a friends stable that is Dutch warmblood/Irish warmblood, She was imported from Ireland and is also a stout 16.2. She is HUGE.
I have not ridden since last Feb, I fell from my friends American Quarter horse/Thoroughbred cross, Hes 15.3hh and ruptured a disk in my back. The fall was completely my fault, I forgot to readjust the stirrups after my friend rode and lost by balance at the canter.
