"Nurth" - Character Reference (Art by Raxrie)
An amazing "base size" reference for my main OC "Nurth", to match the adopted mauve dragon Frissura. Special thanks to
raxrie for drawing him in the same style. I'm so happy with how this turned out!
This reference size reflects a time quite early on in his adventure. He's almost certainly (a lot) bigger by the time Friss meets him...
Nurth (short for "Nurthagus") comes from a conservative clan of feral dragons. Their home range is quite remote, and competition for territory quite fierce. Strength and aggression reigned supreme. He had a rather difficult time, while growing up. He was always rather stout and runty, and inclined toward a gentler more pacifist approach. His dam and sire worried he'd be too soft to succeed in their colony, and the openly said as much.
As an adolescent, he set out alone, feeling he had something to prove. He eventually settled in a cave near some modest agricultural settlements, conveniently available since his kin would typically avoid pesky humans near their nest.
It's soon clear the community isn't actually doing well. Failed crops. A harsh winter. He took pity on them, and discretely left some of his hunting for them to find.
Despite some close calls, Nurth stays the course. He gave the people space, but refused to leave or actively intimidate them. He leveraged a few chance encounters to develop a tenuous "give and take" with the humans. Dealing with pests. Some manual labor. Guard duty. When he helped to find and return a missing toddler, it sealed the deal for most of the remaining skeptics.
Crops returned with gusto. New building and construction proceeded with a dragon's strength and assistance. New settlers and traders came, and more and more of them accepted this odd dragon in their midst. The village began to thrive.
Years later, Nurth considers many of the locals his friends. They favor the dragon with gifts out of respect -- mostly food, as it turns out. Eventually there's less physical activity involved in his role as "village protector", and some of the interaction even begins to resemble worship. He's terribly spoiled, to be honest, but he's also found a place to belong.
Nurth had hoped his success would help him reconcile with his family, but they see only a perversion of their ways, and the fact that their son has gone literally soft. On that last point, Nurth can hardly disagree.
During a festival of bounty (which is ostensibly held in Nurth's honour), an odd mauve dragon appears in the sky. Nurth hasn't seen one of his kind since the last and presumably *final* time he visited his parents. Flying had already been difficult. He mostly hadn't bothered after that, except to stretch and condition his wings. Regardless, he still ought be able to send this feathered interloper on her way... it's the least he can do.
He was the village protector, after all. And a dragon.

Maybe! I plan to write some scenes as background for a sequence of pictures by
