Spellward Bound: Documentary [ch. 4]
“Entry six, day nine,” Casey says. He is in the Water Realm next to a stream, with Tele nearby; there are a few Hyeft milling about with nets and the like. Casey's face hasn't changed much from last time, and he is roughly the same height, but his tail and Hyleft hands remain—along with webbed feet. He is also wearing Hyleft clothing, but with some form of straps over his chest that clearly came from Earth. “Height and weight are the same. I guess Mona was right about me staying this height. I managed to figure out how to work my tail, and I got these feet not long after.
“Tele says that it's about time I learn how to fish, since that's part of being a Hyleft; he's going to explain some of it, and then we'll do some swimming and diving. I managed to figure out how to strap the phone to my chest so you all can get a first-person view of the experience. Thankfully the case for this phone is waterproof...”
Casey carefully removes the phone from its tripod and places it on the rig, making sure to avoid having his hands accidentally cover the screen in slime. “Okay, so what's first?”
“First,” Tele says, “you gotta learn how to breathe. The fins on your head are what you use underwater. To breathe in, you shut your nostrils and spread out the fins, then breathe out normally.”
A few moments pass as Casey tries to figure it out. Tele smiles at him encouragingly. “That's good, just get used to opening and closing your nostrils and moving your fins.”
“This is kinda weird...”
“You're doing fine,” Tele says with a nod. “In fact, I think you're ready to do some swimming! Ready?”
Casey looks into the water a bit. “I never really learned to swim on Earth...”
The older boy smiles again. “It's fine, I'm right here. Just hop in and do what I do.”
With a brief pause, Casey prepares himself. “Here goes nothing...”
The camera is soon submerged along with Casey; the view underwater is surprisingly crystal-clear, and Tele can be seen floating around effortlessly. Other Hyleft are diving as well with the nets from earlier, using them to grab entire schools of fish at once. From the movement of the camera and Tele's expression, it is obvious that Casey struggles at first, but as time goes by the movement is much smoother as Casey tries a few basic movements such as twirling and turning around underwater. Whenever he struggles, Tele is quickly there to hold his hand and get him back on track. A few more minutes of swimming pass before they both decide to surface.
“Okay,” Tele says, “You did really well for your first time!”
“Really? Thanks! It was a lot of fun. Now for the fishing lesson?”
Tele nods. “See that net over there? Grab one end of it and I'll grab the other.”
Casey moves over to the net; it is made of woven underwater plants, with clay beads on the edges to mark handholds. Casey picks it up by that, at which point Tele grabs the other end. “That's it! Now we spread apart so the net is stretched wide, then jump in with it! Ready?”
“As I'll ever be...”
“You'll do just fine, trust me.”
The two make a running leap into the water. This time, they dive deeper than before, and soon enough fish can be seen swimming about. The pair slowly and carefully follow a school from above, then just before the fish can react they swim downwards quickly and wrap the net around the fish, meeting together. Tele twists the handles around each other, the beads “locking” together as he does. He directs Casey to grab one end, and the two drag the net upwards; Casey struggles a bit with the extra weight at first, but with some encouraging looks from Tele he soon manages to catch up. Not long after, the two of them breach the surface and pull the net ashore.
“That was fun!”
“I'm glad you liked it,” Tele says. “You did great for your first time! You'll be fishing with the best of us in no time—”
Suddenly, the pair notice a few Hyleft their age messing with the tripod. “Hey!” Casey shouts, “Get away from that!”
“We're just looking at it,” one of the newcomers says, “Give us a break.”
“No, don't turn it like that, you'll ruin it!”
Tele approaches the group. “Hey, just let it go. It's from his world and he's only got that one.”
“He can wait, then! I wanna see how far this thing bends—”
Tele uses water magic to blast the offenders in the face with water, distracting them enough that he is able to grab the tripod from them. “Now leave it alone, will you? Ask before you touch his stuff.”
The other Hyleft reluctantly back down and leave. Tele hands the tripod over to Casey. “Sorry about that. Here's your thing back.”
“Wow,” Casey says, “that was cool of you!”
“Hey, it's no problem. You're practically family—what kind of big brother am I gonna be if I don't help you out?”
A pause comes between the two. “Family, huh...” Casey says quietly. “Um, yeah, end of Entry Six.”
