For you squirrel fans out there, a picture of my character Deidrei Leafbright. (Yes, I'm looking at you,
dmfalk. ;p )
An intelligent and sometimes restless individual, she wanted to be a mage as a kit, but instead ended up training to be her Artemin clan's best archer, one of the few literate members of the clan, and with a heroic streak stemming from a need to help those weaker than her and tending to express itself through practical jokes upon those whom she believes deserve it. She has a debilitating phobia of ghosts and hates Samhain (Halloween to us). After the death of a childhood friend and lover, she flirted with alcoholism before her family and friends pulled her out of her grief and depression. She is a good friend, a valuable ally, and a bad foe to cross.
Deidrei has an adopted elder sister (whom she treats as a younger sister) and a half-skunk baby sister. Her mother is the Diana for her clan. Deidrei doesn't expect to follow in her mother's footsteps which makes Deidrei feel like a disappointment.
The Artemins are several very loosely allied, all-female clans lead by a Diana. Some are very conservative and anti-male while others, like Deidrei's Treetop Clan, are open and friendly towards males, but do not allow any to take up residence in their village.
The one thing I don't like about this old image is the incorrect orientation of her ears. The visible one should be open to the side, not turned forward.

From what I can tell, squirrel ears typically don't swivel like cat or dog ears do or at least, not to the extent her left ear is doing here. I drew this before I realized that.
I agree that ears swooped back makes a character look aggressive or angry. Maybe that's what some people are aiming for. However, prominent ears are also good for emphasizing emotions (even in species with limited ear movement) so I try to have ears move about where appropriate. Whether I succeed or not depends on how familiar I am with the ears, I guess.

Thanks.
She prefers wine over any other alcohol, even professing to hate the taste of beer, but she dares not indulge herself or she'll have a relapse. Also, the night of the intervention was a bad one all around.

"Dee couldn't handle Lori's death at first so she tried t' drown her sorrows in drink. She preferred wine, but, when we got rid o' it all, she took t' beer though she professed t' hate th' taste." Matreen paused, a sorrowful quiver in her tail. "It was an ugly night when we broke Dee o' th' habit." A shudder ran through the red squirrel's body, straight through to the tip of her tail. "Dee screamed a lot that night, said some horrible things. Begged us t' put her out o' her misery. We didn't realize how much Lori had meant t' her 'til then." Matreen wiped tears from her eyes.

It's from an unpublished novel of mine called Winterfur. I started the novel a few years ago for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers' Month) with Deidrei as an important supporting character and was fortunate enough to actually finish the thing a few months later (will wonders never cease! ). For the following NaNoWriMo, I started the sequel Isen's Bane, promoting Deidrei to co-star status. Every NaNoWriMo after that, I worked on [Isen's Bane[/i] (barely in the case of last year), and it's still not done, not so much because it's a whole lot longer, but because I haven't sat down and simply finished the first draft like I did Winterfur.
Right now, Winterfur is a mix of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and possibly even 5th draft. I'm not likely to revise it to a completed state until Isen's Bane is finished simply because it is Isen's Bane where I've fleshed out Deidrei's character. As such, there are places like the Prologue that are a mess.
If you want to read Winterfur send me an email. and I can send you what I've got. Constructive criticism is welcome, but keep in mind that it is still an early draft.

No offense taken. Harry Potter isn't to everyone's liking.
The main character of Winterfur is a wizardess, but there's no formal school of magic. She does start as an apprentice, but that lasts for only the first few pages of the first chapter. The rest of the story has her as a journeyman (as odd as using "man" sounds for a female ermine). Deidrei comes in somewhere around halfway through the novel.
