Some sketches of Basil of Baker Street, done while watching The Great Mouse Detective in the video room at a convention (probably Confurence).

The story I heard is this:
About six months before the release of The Great Mouse Detective the Spielberg movie, Young Sherlock Holmes, was released and immediately tanked. In typical Hollywood fashion, it was decided that anything associated with Holmes was now box office poison. So the Michael Eisner crew, who had just set up shop at the Disney Studios, decided to rename Basil of Baker Street to the less than inspiring Great Mouse Detective.
This, in turn, prompted an anonymous "gag" memo that was circulated around the Disney animation studio, stating that all the other Disney classics would be similarly renamed (Snow White would become Seven Short Men and a Girl, Bambi would be retitled A Deer Grows Up, etc.). This caused a rift between management and the artists that took years to heal (if it every truly did).
Another story I heard is that Basil/GMD was almost canceled by Eisner, after the poor performance by The Black Cauldron in theaters. But someone at the studio managed to convince the higher-ups that the feature could be used to sell a TV series based on GMD. That was enough to convince the execs to let them finish the movie. And while the TV series was never made, I heard rumors that key elements of the "Basil" series were re-used for Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers.

I really love this. Someday I'm gonna have to practice this style to bring my "Keeping Up with Thursday" comic up to par with Disney quality. Although I've actually contemplated handing over the art duties to a buddy of mine while I write the script for it.
KUWT is a comic of mine that's inspired by this, but definitely not GMD. Used to be, same locale, different time, but a comic I'm trying to win over. :3 I recently got featured.
Do you do any requests by any chance?
