Hope Unquenchable was Princess Skysparkle's mother. She is the last common ancestor of all existing alicorns. Hope had two children: Skysparkle and her twin sister, Stellanova.
Over 1000 years ago, the world was ruled by two monsters named Chaos and Disarray. Back then, unicorns were some of the most despised creatures. Alicorns were considered an absolute abomination. Chaos and Disarray sought to round up every single unicorn -- and drain them of their energy. Many of their subjects were willing minions.
When Hope lost her family, she hid underground in the deepest, hottest mines. One day, a miner discovered her. He was a ground pony named Seth Appleheart. At first, Hope was terrified about being discovered. Seth, on the other hand, fell in love at first sight. Within a few minutes, Hope recognized the ground pony's true feelings. She started to feel the same way about him.
A week later, Seth and Hope secretly married. On one hand, they felt they might do a disservice to their children to have children. On the other hand, they felt a duty to save the alicorn race from extinction. Hope was sure she must be the last one. Until he met Hope, Seth wasn't sure there was ever such a thing as an alicorn.
Safe to say, Seth and Hope's decision paid off. They thought their children might hold the key to their freedom. And they were right!

Visual Description:
Hope's friendship mark is a total eclipse. It looks like a crescent moon combined with the sun's corona. On the other side of the crescent, a bright light shines like a star over the edge of the black disc. Everything about her mark evokes a ray of hope -- the promise of a brand new day -- even in the darkest times.
The corona looks like a wavy 8-point star, bright light orange combined with bright light reddish orange. The bright light over the edge of the black disc is also an 8-point star. This light and the crescent are bright light white.

Thanks for sharing the direct link as, sadly, I am super-duper behind on posts and comments. Getting better, but still far behind where I want to be in order to work on 'Tales of haposauria'. :(

I like this character and her Cutie Mark. It definitely does serve as what her character is meant to represent. I look forward to learning more about her, and her family, in the future. :)
It also seems you found yourself a solid artist to work with. Quite awesome! When you have a 'go to' it makes what you are trying to share at such a large scale far easier.

Here is the table of contents for my first story outline (still a WIP): https://www.patreon.com/posts/43115929.
This is one of my favorite cutie marks I have ever designed. When it all comes together, it looks deceptively simple. But it was a long, complicated process figuring out what parts I needed -- and how to put them together.
It's as if the eclipse was created as a sign that darkness is weaker than light. When Hope conceived her children, she truly began to embody the spirit of hope in the darkest situations. That was when she gained her cutie mark. In a sense, she didn't know who she was until that special moment.
Now that I think about it, I'd say Seth didn't quite know who he was -- until that same moment. I'd say that was when he gained his mark, too.
Actually, under Chaos and Disarray, many ponies were missing their marks -- having little sense of their own identity.
