Yes the vagueness of the title is entirely intentional. I'm working on a campaign idea for a Cyberpunk 2020 game that was inspired by two songs (Pro-bots & Robophobes, and Empty Streets both by Scandroid). So this story counts as world building for that game. In this version of Earth Vancouver WA is the only Vancouver left, the other Cities are New York, Nuevo Buenos Aires (in the southern part of South America), New Cairo (in the southern part of Africa), London, Berlin, Moscow, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. There is a 200 mile band of uninhabitable land that wraps around the planet, centered on the equator. There's also several enclaves of humans that live without technology in northern Canada and Siberia. The human population has been essentially forced to put aside their disagreements and band together simply to survive. Finally the "robots" from the songs would be the sentient ones, where as the one being built in the story is not sentient.
