They actually said "huh, no shadow os, guess this is zero". Then they saw the sun on the horizon and sad "I like 6. I'm going to say this is 6. 6 whats? Let's call them 'hours'. Whoah, this happens 4 times in the day! A day must have... hang on 6+6+6+6.... that's 24 hours!"
Yes it's really that arbitrary

Fun fact! Jews thought (and still think) that the seventh day was literally that: last day of the week. So Saturday is Sabbath. Christians moved it to Sunday 1) to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Sunday and 2) to differentiate themselves from the Jews.
But there is no way of knowing how things would have changed if actual first day of the week was Wednesday!

Unfortunately, much of religion is like that. =P The main contention is over who Jesus really is or was. Though there have been many Christians who persecuted Jews in the past, sad to say.
Thankfully, I think we mostly get along these days, even with the major disagreements. The whole thing with Hitler and the Holocaust gave us a common enemy, even to the point where Jews and Christians in work camps helped each other out. See, they'd work twice as much on the other guy's Sabbath to cover for them. The German guards wouldn't give them days off, but the Jews took off Saturday and the Christians took off Sunday. And they covered each other on those days so the guards wouldn't find out and punish them for "slacking off".
We still do disagree on some things though. =P Can't really be helped. It's what happens when someone claims to have fulfilled the biggest prophecy and wasn't popular with everyone. Rather doubt it'll ever be resolved.
