Back in the 1980s I was a member of the Children's Book Illustrators' Guild of Minnesota (CBIGM), a group that featured several very talented artists, including Caldecott medalist, Stephen Gammel. One of our many projects was a Minnesota-themed activity book, which was sold through the Minnesota Historical Society bookstore. Each member had the opportunity to contribute a page to the book, and this was my submission.
Ignatius D and Pigs-eye were loosely-based on a pair of real-life individuals: Ignatius Donnelly and Pierre "Pig's-Eye" Parrant, two of the most colorful characters in Minnesota -- even U.S. -- history. The former was an author, inventor, politician, writer and aerialist. The latter was a somewhat disreputable French-American fur trader and founder of an outpost called Pig's Eye Landing, which eventually became the state capitol, St. Paul (read the links for more details on these interesting fellows).
The puzzle is solvable! It's based on an old (but unverifiable) tale I heard that the counties of our state were laid out so that an assessor could visit each one without backtracking. See if you can find the solution!
