Reproduction
Two of the forms seen are the result of normal reproduction, which is parthenogenic as there are no known males of this species, though kleptogenesis is also observed quite regularly, especially with their introduction to other sentient species on the galactic stage. Parthenogenesis allows the Axoltzyn to reproduce without need for sexual partners, though this is unsustainable in the long run. That is where Kleptogenesis comes in handy -this species is in a rather unique position wherein they are “compatible” with a huge number of other galactic denizens, meaning that they can avoid the pitfalls of clonal reproduction by incorporating small amounts of their partner’s genetic code into their offspring. This doesn’t usually result in “hybrids” in the traditional sense, instead only serving to avoid generational DNA damage.
Early life
Eggs can be laid every 6 months, either with or without a mate, depending on environmental stability and food availability. A “Mating ritual” is then observed to kickstart the process. Most of the time, this results in one or two eggs, though three is not unheard of. Eggs are either worn in a sling and carried with the mother, left under a heat lamp in their residence or stored in communal nursery chambers. Hatching is a ritual affair, with the mother and possibly older siblings assisting with small golden mallets and tongs to free them if they are unable to do so themselves.
After hatching, there is a short stage where they will “imprint” on the closest large, moving object, which will (hopefully) be a parent. Thankfully, they can be eased out of association if an undesirable imprint does occur, as was demonstrated after an unfortunate newborn began to stumble along behind a recycling collection truck.
After they are imprinted, the extended family is gathered and a name chosen, which may be traditional or in the case of Diktat interactivity, combined with a local naming structure. Two tabs are then created; one with the family’s sigil, and the other with the hatchling’s chosen name. These tabs hold great symbolic value and are traditionally forged from gold, though tungsten, titanium and carbon tube mesh are becoming popular. They will carry these tabs with them for the rest of their lives, adding a third of their own design once they reach maturity, along with other significant additions they may choose.
Any other questions regarding the cute little guys are welcome as well -I need to balance out the smut with wholesome lore and sketches!
