they actually house what's called an "Air Grabber." you pull a lever under the dash and a seal comes down over the air cleaner, forcing colder, oxygen-denser air into the engine, letting it perform a bit better. in 1970 they made it into a mechanical trapdoor that pops out when you push a switch!
