Golden child in every meaning of the phrase. A very clever boy who can use his brains and body to the maximum.
Yes, he is a villain. In a classical sense, not for some noble cause or for revenge. Just for his own egoistic purposes. He is not a pampered bastard, as one might think. He is just rotten. It happens.
He has good family, loving parents and everything would be great if not for a one BIG “BUT”
Izaya sees ghosts. Sees them, feels them and does not quite control his ability. Regardless of what he wants, every other night he is out of his body in the Netherworld, and at the day many ghosts and other dead and semi-dead creeps trouble him. Grandfather by mother is absolutely certain that boy has a gift for necromancy which foolish child does not use and wastes talent.
Izaya does not want to communicate with the dead. Kaneko studies at the Astronomy Department, he likes horoscopes, constellations. Also dabbles with magic and loved to collect insects. In his free evenings, he writes stories from the horror genre. He wants to write his own book, but for now all that he writes are stories from dead people who come to him at days and nights.
Imagine that you lie in bed and can’t sleep because dead widow moans into your ear that her son buried her in the wall alive. You listen, listen - and then go for typewriter.
Collections of such stories from Kaneko are rather popular and are among local best-sellers, which serves as a major pain for Izaya. He is afraid that the book that will be written by him, and not in the whispers of the dead, will not be liked by anyone.
That's it. Quite hard when you want to just write stuff and gaze at the stars and others want you to become a necromancer.
