Mock-up of Caterwaul issue one, circa 2010

Here's the mock-up cover for the upcoming first issue of Caterwaul, which will be available from Angry Viking Press later this summer. The logo and text was done in Photoshop, but all the artwork was done by hand using Prismacolor markers and pencils. I'll have to tweak the brightness and sharpness levels, since there's actually quite a bit of detail that was lost in the scanning process. I had to scan this thing in two pieces and reassemble it in Photoshop, since it's about 11 X 17 inches in size!
This is pretty much the full crew until the second story (issue 4). Starting at the upper left of the picture (and going clockwise) are the following members: Veronika Eva Vonderschmidt, Marie Queneau, Dinah Auger, Tiffany Brookes, Tamara Jolsen, Detective Leandra Cassel, Crystal Vaughn, Detective Frank Stone, and Leila Martins.
Of course, according to certain mouth-breathing members of the internet chan culture, I've never improved or changed my style in 15 years.
Yeeeaaahhh...okay.
EDIT: Replaced previous file with updated logo image file.

Oh, nice to see ya working on more comics SW, it will be good to see all the girls again.
I'd actually written a story featuring just her and Frank a few years ago. It was a murder-mystery thing, but it was never slated to be turned into a comic.
But there's nothing they can do to get the new work I have planned for the future. Kinda hard to get a copy of something to illegally scan it when the only version you can see is the one the artist decides to post online, huh?
See, there really is a way to beat piracy! Just gotta think low-tech, man!
*simulates a severe beating*
http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Jim_Hardiman
A rumor has been thoroughly pushed around and discussed that "Desiree Lee" is in fact fictional, and merely an alter-ego of Jim Hardiman himself. Various pieces of evidence have been put forth to support this view such as:
Virtually indistinguishable art styles, even taking into account the claims that Jim trained her.
Desiree's enraged reactions to being accused to of not being real, which she responds to by threatening to post some bit of personal information to confirm her identity, which never comes to being as Jim "handily shows up to calm her down" and "talk her out of it."
This allegation has slowly been propagated over the years through forums, mailing lists, and lately, throught image boards such as 4chan, Onechan or Sidechan, but it has never been adequately proved and/or refuted.
Its funny how they call that "evidence".
If ignorance is bliss, this world must have some happy motherfuckers in it.
You don't know how right you are, it's scary how much people will ignore just to make themselves happy.
Still, there's no denying your new style is a treat to look at.
Even with my current "regular" workload, I should have it all finished by mid- to late-June.
Any way like I said I sure miss the old cartoon style because of all the crazy sexy antics the Skunk gals got into but your new style is more realistic and though I miss the old ways, like gas at $1.00 a gallon and a Soda was only 25 cents and the fandom was about funny and some time sexy critters and not bizarre sexual fetishes time moves on so the past is the past and no one not even Anubis can change it.
So I miss the old but really look forward to the new because you take them from cartoon to reality and I like reality.
Jason.
And for AVP moreover, I'm following half od their titles now !!! XD XD
Superb cover
Great artwork!

If I were going to nitpick I would say something about number of incisors, but I won't. 83
And yeah, I know about the incisors. I consciously changed a lot of the dental work, since these critters have to have a few similarities despite being different species at their roots. Canines are more specific to each breed, as is the jaw shape and most of the teeth behind the canines. But the front ones are usually a mixture of animal and human-styled teeth.
Good eye, though! Here, have a cookie. You've earned it...
Incisor numbers is one of the few things I nitpick about when I look at others' work. The last time I mentioned it the artist got pretty annoyed, but I seem compelled to keep pointing it out.
Just kidding. They seem pretty cool. Honestly, I'm still sorta in the pre-comic stage, since I don't have anything out yet. But check with Shawntae Howard :ebonyleopard: since he has done work for/with them. They strike me as honest folks who won't do the same shit certain other unnamed companies may have done in the past...
Spoiler? Characters joining the crew, or heaven forbid, dying?!?
I was wondering, since scanners take away a lot of picture detail (at least my ancient one does.)
Have you tried using a camera? My brother got one recently, about seventy dollars, with twelve mexapixels, it gives an amazing quality photo. (So much so I've been substituting it for my scanner ever since.)
They kind of cost a lot, but it could possibly be worth it if you don't want to have to touch things up on the computer afterwards.
Also, amazing job on the cover, and I have one question... would you ever consider drawing a Caterwaul poster?
I only ask because I think it would be something cool to have.
I don't know about a poster. That would ultimately be up to the folks at AVP.
No big deal on the poster, I was just curious.
Amazing work.
There are a few guys that Crystal likes (especially Detective Stone, who is actually engaged to another avian), but it can be tricky to have a relationship when you work a job that may need you to leave at a moment's notice.
