Late last year I got a request from a fan who wanted a picture to illustrate a key scene in a story he submitted to the Spontoon Island website. Originally he just wanted the line art, but I discovered his image was the perfect item to expieriment trying out my photoshop "Graytones" on. He was rather impressed with the results, and posted an "Unfinished" version with his story. Here, I added more details to the figures, and put a little "Shine" on some of the equipment. I still don't quite consider it finished... Yet.

There's quite a few US Subs on display as museums. The first one I thought of was the USS Pampino moored in San Francisco Bay. If you're going to Anthrocon, there's a Former US "Spook" sub moored at the Science museum across the river. Of course the "Crown Jewel" of all is the U-505 German Sub at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. I have a personal interest in the WW II "Gato" class subs, so I wouldn't mind doing some "Research" myself.
You like the Gato class to?
I first saw one in an old McHale's Navy show, then a few more in WWII movies and I wanted to learn more about them.
My Grandfather, knowing how much I liked them, got me some Blue line on white Blue Prints of one.. it used to hang on my bed room wall.... most guys an a few girls thought I was weird for having it.

Even the 90s Johnny Quest had one of those! Leaving aside construction and costs, though... too much training, too much technical stuff (and probably just plain too much discomfort!) to be worth the effort for most civilian groups.
It's a neat idea for fiction, though... even though the Johnny Quest ones were pretty lame.

I think he's right about that ^_^
Speaking of restorations, they had another big one about five years ago. I haven't been since before that, though. Would be neat to see, both to see what they did and just to be back on* the boat again.
* even though "in the boat" would probably be more accurate -- though I'm pretty sure we also used the phrase "through the boat" to describe giving a tour.

I like the shading. It gives good separation between the various elements and depths of the pictures that is much harder to attain with line art alone. I might suggest punching the ocean darker so it doesn't look like they're floating in coffee, and will also help separate the background from the focus of the picture. For some reason the detail on the deck gun on the left just fascinates me.
You're right. The ocean is a tad light. When I get time I'll rework that. I want to add more highlights and details to the after deck and the rear AA gun too. I consider this one of my "Unfinished" projects. ...Kinda like building a Hot Rod, or a working live steam model locomotive. It'll keep me tweaking on it for years.
Very good work.
Now, all I have to do is rob the local bank, then i can afford to commission art from you. Yeah, sure. Sticking up a bank with a four pound hand sledge, cause I own no firearms. "Ya-ll gimmie yer money or I'll crack this here marble counter yah hear?"

I love this scene! The U-boote is very well detailed...and I'm a big U-boat fan( I even have a couple of U-boat t-shirts that I wear often) so I would know!
I first saw this in NAF 24, ALONG WITH ALL THOSE OTHER WONDERFUL WORKS OF YOURS!!
And yes, I love your "Rosante" starship!!
