Continuing the Emma And Ash sketchbook.
Something like this will be the splash page for chapter one. Seven years after their failed brief secret romance Ash (an exiled wolf shaman enslaved to a coyote tribe) is forced to return to seek Emma's help ; many of the coyote village have become sick with a mystery illness, many dying - then Ash's adopted lynx daughter Teesha becomes ill. No matter how much it will hurt to see Emma again he can't let Teesha die if there is a chance Emma can save her with fox medicine.
Ash has been walking three days with with almost no sleep, so he's walking in the cold stream to try to ease the pain in his feet...and it's a long way to go...it will be night again before they arrive.
This was the first time i tried to design the colony fort as a whole. The colony was founded because mining wealth in the dormant volcano - there is a trellis bridge for mine carts and miners leading to the mountain road. To the right on a rocky pinnacle there is the governor's palace and the wealthy mansions. In the middle a crater with the poor neighborhoods descending to a lake. To the left a docking tower for dirigibles. Outside the walls to left is a large encampment of native tents - coyotes, bobcats, lynx (no bears - they don't trust the foxes) - who trade produce and game in exchange for fox manufactured goods.
Yes, the perspective is a bit off - it's a sketchbook - i wuz working out ideas and styles. Speaking styles, some of the ink lines on this are so fine that i couldn't just raise the white level be remove the pencil lines...so i just did a lot of digital painting in white to selectively remove some pencil while leaving some in where it looked good.
This was a relatively recent addition to the sketchbook : started May 21 '17 and finished November 6 '18.

On page three of the sketchbook i listed the main art influences i wanted to incorporate into the style and how and why (quote) :
Moebius - is a way of seeing and arranging depth, form, perspective, and rendering.
Mucha - is the inter-relation of lines, curves, and shapes to create emotion/compostition (and colour). (also Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews).
Bode - is a system of exaggeration and distortions of form (rounding, sqash, quint, little etc) and the inter-relation of these forms to create depth.
Beardsley (and Manga) - is a system of tones in black and white and their dramatic use in compositions.
Kaluta - combines all of the above (and some Frazetta elements - form, depth, colour) - perspective, rendering, line, composition - stylistic distortions, tones, black and white.
Selective elements from classic Disney, Bluth, Dan Haskett.
end quote
Needless to say some of these were also influences on lots of other artists including Miyazaki and Stan Sakai - i am not purposely using them as influence, but because we have a lot of the same influences (and i love their art as well) there will be times the Emma And Ash style will look a bit like their styles. If i'm lucky.

Regardless of its flaws, Ifind the layout of the scene to be excellent. I do love the detailed layout of the city, how it is encased in surrounding walls with a winding road connecting it to the mountains. (The closest one looks like a volcano by the way.) The docking tower for the dirigibles is genius.
^_^ - the myth refuses to die cuz it's so wonderful - here's what actually happened :

I recall from my reading that one did make an attempt, nice to have some more details. The updrafts and winds up there kind of put the last nail in the coffin. I guess they said the ships would end up on their nose. Well, the building got one hell of a decorative hat anyway. Do you think the superimposed dirigible was the Macon or Akron? Another party that was fun while it lasted.
Too late and lazy for me go from art studio to living room to find my book on airships. The article noted that the superimposed dirigible was the Los Angeles. read about her before. quick search verified:

The chapter opens the night before with Ash trying to help Teesha get some sleep - then this morning desent - not much explanation - later we find out that Ash thinks that Teesha will die, that Emma was involved in the disease outbreak so wouldn't help Teesha, and that he would not survive seeing her again as he was suicidal when they broke up years ago. Bit of a plot spoiler (there will be some with these pics) - one of those stories that changes the context of earlier scenes as the tale progresses - leading to re-readings. Sort of like a murder-mystery - once you find out what actually happened you re-read it in a new light.
^_^
A bit of old Chinese and Japanese landscape influence on mountains. i took sumi-e painting lessons for awhile in mid-teens .
The foreground flower-like arrangement of stones is a coyote trail symbol warning that there is both profit and danger ahead - idea of trail stones from inushuks.
