Looking back at The Real Ghostbusters, especially the later seasons, it is clear that it's an 80's equivalent of Scooby-Doo, except that the ghosts are real. Many of the main characters on The Real Ghostbusters have personality equivalents in the main characters of Scooby-Doo.
Slimer increasingly became the center of the show, much like Scooby was the real star of his. Both also primarily communicate through mostly unintelligible speech, are constantly hungry and consume huge quantities of food in one sitting, and tend to cause hijinks in almost every episode.
Peter and Shaggy are the slackers of their respective groups, with them hanging back while the others do the heavy lifting. They also are the second most likely people on their teams to get into crazy shenanigans. In addition both of them are braggarts, wanting to revel in the glory of their work. They even have pursued multiple love interests.
Ray and Fred are the heart and real leaders of their respective organizations, and are eager to take the team into new capers. Both of them also use the "divide and conquer" strategy in order for their teams to cover more ground and find their enemy. They are also superstitious, with Ray being far more interested in studying spiritual lore. In addition, they tend to be the people in charge of traps, Fred with nets and Ray with the ghost trap. Also, in a twist of fate, Ray and Fred were both voiced by veteran voice actor Frank Welker.
Egon and Velma are the most knowledgeable among their cohorts, though Egon is more skilled in engineering. They both have the tendency to figure out what is really happening while on a case, and are the people most likely to come up with a way to solve the problem. Both of them are also sarcastic to a degree, and are highly rational.
Winston and Daphne tend to be the average people on their teams, but they do understand some of the technical babble thrown around and have, at points, taken a active role in cases and sometimes figured out solutions. Both of them even know how to pick locks. They also have, on multiple occasions, gotten captured by the ghost/villain of the week.
Scooby-Doo belongs to Viacom and Hanna-Barbera.
The Real Ghostbusters belongs to Columbia, Sony, and DiC.
