My drive is mostly ran by my passion of nature and animals (I don't know why I draw so saturated .. it just happens XD) and my inspiration is often influenced by music and for sad pictures it's usually mood.
In this case I started with my desire to make a croc character. Once I made the head it sort of told me the pose I should make. Colors I really guess because I was never good at coloring (usually was into pencil and pen for most of my life)

Bah it's just luck. I struggle quite alot. This picture I probably started around August then put it aside because I wasn't sure if I would throw it out or not ^^;.
As I see your style I would say there's no reason you couldn't do this just a little practice. Starting small helps like doing a headshot and then learning to digital paint and add detail.
