Working on shadowing I colored a picture of mine
I really liked how the chest plate came out, I did shadowing on the same layer as the colors, I think next time ill just put it above im not sure.

when you say more colors, do you mean more of variasions of the same color ie more browns/blacks/greys? I am struggling with making stonger shadows, not sure if i should just go insanely brigther/darker to make it stand out. and yes the artists credo practice practice practice...if only it came in pill form
It's not bad :) As for shading, when I first started out digital coloring, I used the same layer. Once I figured out there was a layer feature to my art program, I switched to that and found things tremendously easier. So really, its just your choice. Mess around with some other color works and get a feel for it.
