The problem with Nathan is that we don't give him the choice to take on his life the way he wanted, he's forced to fight because that's why he was created for. Every day it's the same ritual that has been going on for years, he's exploited beyond his physical and mental capacities and put in a constant state of stress, surviving and death. (With a self-destruct device wrapped around his neck, this makes things much more complicated).
what makes him strong is not his strength but his will.
He has suffered so much in his life that he has lost the notion of pain, but still manage to save the tiny portion of good he has within him.

It is in this kind of moment that he lets his animal instinct take over, to forget and focus on the goal he has been given -Victory. He does it reluctantly but he has no choice, it's like that and not otherwise. He just feels that no matter what he does, death is always behind him.
