Also,theres two versions of the game going around,one that has issues with the sound files,that you either gotta disable or rename them I think,and theres another version with the soundfiles fixed and all you've got to do is patch it up and play.

thing is the game will run fine for a good long while, then i'll get a clusterfuck of error messages when i start it up a while after that.

Yeah,sounds like it. Try nabbing the smaller version of the game from madotsuki's closet ( http://www.theneitherworld.com/yumenikki/links.htm ) and see if it still crashes maybe?
