It's good that there's the likes of you around though, to remind me not to give up on that ideal. ^.^
for me I think it was useful to drop the lines earlier because it forced me to learn how light changes with the planes and the natural outlines made by light from the back or sharp occlusions
As for those dividing zones and the variable borders... you raise a very good point and it's something I only barely brushed over myself with relatively clumsy lighting. Clearly I never quite gave the subject enough focussed research and it may well be worth pursuing doing more art like that myself in the future... Got to pull oneself away from commissions in order to draw for oneself every now and then, eh?
and yup I love pulling myself from commissions to feel freer to be more experimental or take a lot of time etc
