I can stand up through your destruction
my voice will tremble my hands will shake
I can stand up through your destruction
and I won't break
I can't let go of the painted desert
I can't let go of the old ways
I can't let go of the home land
It's in the blood
I can't let go
Sweat it out
let it out
Get it out of my head.
~Robbie Robertson "In the Blood"
Anyone who knows me knows that I am very proud of my heritage and the history surrounding it. Of course, in this day and age, since we are all educated people with a sense of decency, I am not subject to any racist comments.
Please not that the last sentence is coated with a heavy dose of sarcasm.
Many times I have been subjected to comments about my being Irish or Indian...let alone the fact that I'm Polish. I ususally shrug off these comments and take them with a grain of salt. However, that doesn't mean that I can forget about those comments easily.
Recently, a close friend of mine was making these comments about my being Indian. I shrugged it off and told him, "Yea, yea...whatever," but those comments stuck with me through the rest of the day.
A few days later, the comments crossed my mind again, and I started doodling this picture. It then grew and became the finished product you see before you.
This picture is my rebuttal to every comment that I have received in the past and will receive in the future. My rebuttal says:
Indian and Proud.
