Its a mixed bag. Its pretty mindless action anime, set in one of those "people have been sucked into a game world, die in the game, die in real life" setups. hell, when it came out originally it was slammed for being really tropy and unoriginal in that respect.
but if you just want a good "oh he beat the bad guy, awesome" kind of experience, then it works out pretty well. The second season is a bit more interesting, the sequel series "SAO Alternative Gun Gale Online" was more of season 2, but set in an FPS instead, and then there was a movie called SAO Ordinal Scale which moved the game into an AR setting. It's one of those "If you like this then your taste in anime is trash" kind of deals, but at the same time its a guilty pleasure for a lot of people.
