Last fall I was walking through the woods as usual looking for this and that to photograph when all of a sudden I found myself face-to-face with a very unusual bear! She was very small for a bear, stood on two legs, and had long arms, one of which was rushing straight for me! BAM! The next thing I remember was waking up flat on my back and looking up at her beautiful brown eyes and expectant smile... so I drew back my arm and smacked her on the face as hard as I could. She then gasped, growled, and pulled me into her arms for a big bear-hug. I swooned! It was love at first sight.
You see, I had just watched Disney's 'Bongo' just a while back and knew that bears 'say it with a slap' so to speak when they want to express affection. That's what she had done and I had replied in kind. If only all those hikers in B.C. had only known but then again, a love-slap from a Grizzly is almost always fatal anyways. I was lucky, more than lucky! You see, Lulubelle as I named her, is a bit of a mutant. Perhaps she's the unlikely offspring of a regular brown bear and one of those lonely northern trappers, one who knew the lingo and could survive a love-slap from your regular brown bear which is pretty nasty even when they're not being enthusiastic about it. Poor girl, after being weened from her sow she found herself having a hard time of it in the woods on her own. One day though she stumbled upon my place in the country and after watching me for many days, decided I was the one... she'd take a chance.
And we've been together ever since! She tries to help out around the place as much as she can but really isn't much of a cook, grubs, nuts & berries y'know. I don't care though as I'm a great cook, but she has filled that one void, that one hunger I've felt so keenly. You see... northern nights are so long and cold.
This is the first plush I've ever made and is rather special in one big way... she's made of real fur! Muskrat my friend tells me. I made it out of an old coat from the 50's I found in storage, perfect for salvage material. Now if you know the feel of real fur you can imagine what it's like snuggling with her at night, her arms wrapped around my middle, paws on my back, sides, and um, all over the place. There's nothing like waking up with that muzzle nestled on my neck, tickling my chest and um... well you get the idea. One last thing I have to mention... you can't see how wonderfully rounded her tush is, perfect for gripping and um... well you get the idea.
Yeah, dream on!

Thanks! Many revisions, much honing, but that's s.o.p. for Ver 1.0. I've approached learning sewing very deliberately, first by getting patterns from this and that, and then practicing making this and that with felt before I made something from scratch. What scratch though! Aieee!!! We must ship you out here for a snuggle, or who knows, there's the possibility of me heading east... all the way to Halifax and thence on to London on a freighter boat! As for looks, well, that head needs work. But y'know... at night... I really could care less what she looks like! (Don't tell her that though, she just might slap my head off this time.)
Ah, once again, it's not about the look(s) but the feel(s)!
If? IF! And what happens IF I find out you were in the area and DIDN'T drop in? Queue minions! Where's my minions! Mwwwahahahahaaa! I do wonder though... with Theo here now, and if you drop in, and um... what's critical mass for our sort of folk? You'll love the new(er) me though, not nearly as crippled as that useless sod you ran into last time!

Sure! I've love to drop by and see you two... are you up at the farm, or still in the city?
I just spent the last week hanging out at Dream Tiger's cattle farm near Edmonton... gotta love furs with lots of driveway space for me to use!
As for the plushie... part of my is offended that people butcher animals for their fur; part of me wonders what a life-size raccoon plushie made of real raccoon fur would be like.
Glad you're feeling healthier!

I was only in the city for the winter, now it's here almost full-time. Too hard by myself and I needed a good LONG stretch to get out, network, meet and greet etc etc. DID! Strangely though, never got myself actually OUT at all, as in party/gig. Did do a lot of meets with the local furs though, finally getting to actually know a few of em.
Edmonton! A mere hop skip and a jump eh? And yes, we both quite agree with the rural scene, which agrees with us (fortunately).
I too of course am totally offended at the practice, but salvage of a 40-50 year old coat is a different thing entirely. As for what it feels like... no words to describe! I introduced her to Theo the first time he came up here, and didn't see him or her for a fortnight!!! They both came back flushed and glowing. *lol*
Bloody doctors and their bloody information and the bloody way they talk and don't answer questions straight! I've NEVER run into that in any other profession! I mean, if I can explain esoteric math, physics, science, etc etc etc, and also understand the same from so many sources... why is it so goddamn hard to do this with them! The skinny is, steroid shots in the hips once in a while and see how long I can stretch things out (probably quite a while). And then there's the issue of trust... would you trust a doctor who has proven himself to be rude and arrogant, and tried to bitch-slap and talk to you like a 12-year-old to cut you open to do anything? *huff* *puff* And I'll stop right there, because I've already been there too many times. S'ok, I'm fine with laughing at em, because they don't seem to realize how small and pathetic that makes them.

Snuggle,sigh!
And speaking of angels, just before I dropped out of the loop I ran into this movie... "Bear's Kiss". Now that's definitely both and ! Posted about it on my LJ, will in a few communities soon.

Ah you grabbed it! Right on! I do so love that line... "I could hurt you... if I wanted to." What a bear thing to say. *sigh* Lulubelle LOVES that movie, and loves that line. I asked her this spring if she'd be leaving now that the winter was over... she whispered in my ear... "I couldn't hurt you... if I wanted to." *SWOON!*
Definitely more pictures will be forthcoming. First though, I've got to sew her up a new set of lingerie because being all brown, it's hard to get her curves to show. As for that set of red knickers she's wearing in that shot, well, they seem to have been torn off by someone in a fit of lustful abandon. Go figure eh!
oh, she's a sweetheart! I love the way you've shaped her shoulders and torso- she looks quite the lover :o) That body shape is why I love my Spirit Bear so.
Bears say it with a slap! I had forgotten that scene (and Bongo is one of my favorite Disney Bears beyond Baloo). This is my other favorite Slap and Tickle toon scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnxU7W8b74Q
Sorry to re-re-post- I don't use FA much and it shows...

Ah great! I JUST downloaded that movie a week or so ago, looking forwards to getting back HOME up north, settling into my huge soft sprawl space, and watching it with me honey-bear.
I'd been modifying bears and such, getting my chops down (new to sewing) by grabbing patterns off of plush, adding on longer more yummy arms and legs, tightening up tushes etc etc when I ran across that old fur coat that was in storage up here. The second I touched it I just KNEW I had to make something out of it right away. The result of course, was my Lulubelle. Yep, watched the movie a lot while making her to keep myself in the proper state of mind. She's not done yet of course as I was very conservative with material, knowing I'd be replacing and upgrading certain sections as I went along and more/better material came to hand. Thing is, how could I EVER just disassemble and start from scratch? The mere thought! Nooooo!
Since finding that coat I've started keeping my eyes out for real fur items in the thrift stores (and political broohaha be damned). Eventually I'll have a bit of a line here, big much more anthro plush for the discerning plushophile. There's such a HUGE difference between real and faux fur, and the second you wrap arms around the real thing anything else becomes a pale shadow. Mrrrr, got enough pure white and black rabbit fur for a panda. *swoon!*

I had a bearskin coat (as best I could determine) that I rescued from a yardsale throw-away pile. Unfortunately the leather was so dried out that I couldn't use it for anything: I had planned to do exactly what you are doing.
It's a tough call but I understand your POV. And anyway, the animals are long gone, the coats aren't new, and it would be more of a travesty just to throw the hides away than to re-animate them, so to speak.
Yes, do take some more pics! :o)
