Daiyōkai (大妖怪, だいようかい) "Great demon"
I was born in the eighties, so. . . of course I'm watching Yashahime, the Inuyasha sequel. This series is so shameless about being a nostalgia bath, they go so far as to have the characters SAY as much, lol. I'm unironically loving it.
Really the ONLY thing they could've done to hit more of my buttons with Sesshomaru was make him a Dad. So, yeah. I'm slain. My heart can't take it.

I mean, I love him as a dad. The whole story Kaede told makes absolutely 0 sense, though. I don't believe it for a second. My guess is. . . .
(SPOILERS, potentially?)
I believe the mother died or nearly died in childbirth, and he left the pups with his mother to look after them while he tried to find a way to save her. Which... mistake. But, I'm pretty sure if anyone abandoned them in the wild, it was her. That's very her. Sess never once abandoned anyone in his charge, except for leaving Rin with Kaede, but that was absolutely necessary and she was very well taken care of there. And he returned to protect her when necessary.
The idea of him leaving them makes absolutely no sense. If that's the direction the writers chose to take, they'd be undoing an entire series worth of character growth, and I don't think they're going to do that.

Probably you saw them, but the last episodes clarified a bit of the mist surrounding it (episode 15)
Pointless arguments apart (lots of people arguing the "omg Rin wasn't 18yo"), i got a very interesting almost "elven"-vibe of Sesshoumaru approaching Rin and bringing the kids away with him. In a way not exactly the "devoted family daddy Human" but... realistically what a Daiyōkai could do.
Also if Rin was in danger or threatened, make quite sense for Sesshoumaru to not try stop the wildfire, also considering that the daughters were somewhat protected and excluding their unexpected(?) separation, there was likely someone (Jacken? someone else?) who picked-off Setsuna during the wildfire. Possibly Sesshoumaru was aware they were not truly in danger.
Same could be said for sealing Inuyasha and Kagome inside the pearl,it was clearly done in a way to protect them from the imminent danger of Kirinmaru.
Said that, i EXPECT an eventual meeting with Sesshoumaru to be quite rough.
Especially IF Sesshoumaru is forced to do something for Rin's sake and also with the trope of facing-off confronting your own parent as a way of growth. I would not expect less from Sesshoumaru, in a hard-teaching lesson to either Towa and/or Setsuna.

Looks like we're getting the meeting finally next episode. I haven't been surprised by anything so far. . . disappointed in some cases, but I'm in no doubt of where they're going with this. It's always been pretty transparently clear they were baiting Sess as a villain. I'm certain whatever the fuck his plan was, setting up the protective zone for the girls, sealing Inukag in the pearl, spending all this time apart from his family, he's going to justify it was necessary to save them all.
Where I have a problem with all of this. . . is whether or not that justification ends up making any sense. It seems to me if Zero/Kirinmaru were too powerful for him to directly overcome, a coalition of forces might have been enough. If the whole gang had come together, if he'd prepared them all and asked for their help, it MIGHT not have been necessary for them to, I dunno, miss raising their children through all their formative years??? I highly doubt he warned Inu/Kag he was going to seal them, and if he did, that's hella OOC for Inuyasha, to give up before even trying to fight an enemy, and willingly be sealed away from his newborn child. It's not OOC for Sess to think he knew best in all of this and make decisions for everyone, but it IS a little bit of a backpedaling on his character growth in the original show. Also, sealing his children ended up not working out either, in the end. So I'm hoping for some contrition here, at least an admittance that he might've mishandled this whole thing.
If the answer to all of the above is - even allied, they could NOT have taken down Kirinmaru/Zero, and the point of all of this was to raise up a new generation to help them fight an enemy who would have certainly killed them all 14 years ago. . . that's dark, but I guess it's a way to go.
Guess we'll see.

Spoiler from latest episode 18 xd
That went... somewhat better than i expected? Sesshomaru acted quite clearly to protect them, and rewatching the past episodes the same can be said also for Inuyasha/Kagome (sealing them and saving them for an imminent dangerous threat). Also the whole "interaction" went pretty much in classic Sesshoumaru-style. One thing that i am wondering if he was somewhat keep an eye on the daughters (or he was RANDOMLY close the scene?).
I think that on the point of raising children/formative years to have a bit a different point of view ^^ I mean... he's not human, and the cryptic words he said when he carried them away from Rin: "It's a rite of courage and cowardice" maybe hint a bit to a particular kind of upbearing. One thing that could be interesting to see and MAYBE explore these questions it's a potential appearence of Sesshoumaru's mother, who (by the way) disclosed a similar disattached behavior toward Sesshoumaru himself yet betraying an actual desire to help him.
Episode 18 however was interesting for some other points, personally i was somewhat disappointed by Konton's death: somewhat anti-climatic? And i thin the character could have played a longer part in fashion of similar villains of the original series.
Interesting point it's that EVERY time the Butterfly is mentioned, both Konton AND Kirinmaru never confirmed or admitted to be behind its action... let's remember we once saw Sesshoumaru himself with the Butterfly.
Also there is something in Kirinmaru's behavior that may suggest he's not the real villain of the series, and this also could be Zero to fill this role.

I think Riku will end up being the ultimate villain of the series. Zero for sure, but also probably not the end-tier threat they have to deal with. That, or whatever force Riku is attempting to bring forth with the pearls.
I feel like Sess's mother isn't going to make an appearance in this story, although I hope I'm wrong. The fact is, there isn't much time left for them to introduce another important character, and as it is we have had SO little time spent with the families being. . . families. None, in fact. While I don't find any of Sess's behavior to be wildly OOC, I feel the writers need to give us a damn good reason for all of it, and soon. I fully believe he's doing what he feels he has to to protect his family, and probably his brother's as well, but I'm concerned the reasoning might be as full of plot holes as the rest of the writing in this show has been. And GODDAMN, I would like a few precious moments of his mask slipping. We know he has vulnerability, we know he can feel, and they have literally given us nothing in this entire show, thus far. I want him to drop the cool, calm, collected demeanor and get desperate, be afraid, be angry. . . anything, at this point. And I want that awkward process of the family trying to come to know one another, finally. I want the girls to contend with what happened to them, and for Rin to have SOMETHING of a role in this series. I am so disappointed, more than I can say, that she became a victim again. I was hoping as an adult, her scrappy, survivalist side would come out and she'd have a chance to play a role in the story. Not as a power-player, but at least as an emotional center, or a mediator. Something.
And yeah, Konton's death was so anti-climactic, I honestly briefly thought he was faking dead with a spell. But he wouldn't have given up the pearl in that case, so. . . nope. Guess he's just dead. Every single one of the perils has died in an unsatisfying way, at this point. Majorly disappointing as far as villains go.

(hope you've finished watching the last episode)
So, you was wrong about Sess's mommy haha xp She got quite an interesting scene and I hope we will see more in the future. I think your hopes (and not just your) to see a "family scene" bonding it's something we will have to keep in our dream or fanart, i mean... i would personally love a serious/fun/awkward scene of all the characters sharing a tea in Sess's mom palace but i suspect this will have to stay in the real of wild hopes.
I think however (and appreciate it) the actions of Sesshomaru as a "silent guardian" for his children: both the hints and help to Setsuna training, as well as the little exchange of line they had. I think he partially retain the disattached not-human emotion of his own mother who tends to ignore half-human, yet the distant help he provide make for a direct intervention. The Tenseiga ending scene is particularly significant also on this (we have also to remind that some things he say can be simple some bravado, he said to Zero to not really care of the Tenseiga, but we know it's not true... and he would have simply tossed it away if that was the case).
There are other elements of interest however, the character of Riku (while still have some mysteries) it's proving interesting especially since because there is some completely surprising hint of potential romance-interest with Towa ! (bit surprised of this).
However one final thing i would comment it's that ... there is something deeply sad on this whole story so far. Basically that no main villain is a true villain at core! Kirinmaru is a powerful Daiyōkai who yes... he may dislike humans, but basically was the "buddy/rival/friend" of Toga! And still nowadays he seems more interested to enjoy a fight with the girls (even if yep, potentially killing one) rather than deliberately murder them with a scheme like Naraku could do.
And Zero well... pretty much a dramatic unloved character, sort-of Kikyo but more dark, densperate (and less wise).
Honestly i just can't really feel the same dislike/drive to fight these villains compared to someone like Naraku xD

I have a lot of mixed feelings about the finale. I appreciate the fact that Sesshomaru is not human and I want him to maintain that feeling of being 'other', but I feel as though they've taken his character progression backwards to a huge degree and I hope they have a damn good reason. The fact that he deliberately left the girls with Kirinmaru, even potentially knowing he might kill them... even if it was to push them to unlock their powers. . . Is incredibly cold, and I find it hard to believe he would've considered it worth the risk. If the blade can't be reforged, that's sacrificing a child for power, which feels like something he would have considered a long time ago, but now...
Anyway, I love Kirinmaru. Zero embodies a trope that I despise, the female villain who's entire motivation centers around a man. And I hate that they fridged Rin.
I don't know. Season 2 has a lot of explaining to do.

Hey hey Rukis! Hope you're doing fine! Also hope you're watching and enjoying the seconds season! The last episode 13 really solved some things...
Personally i like the gradual explains of all the tricks and reasons and details behind secrets and mysteries we get so far, and even the "filler" moments including Kohaku AND
Takechiyo! They made an effort, despite the physical appearence and comic-relief character to actually develop him and his backstory in a different way from Shippo.
I think Sesshomaru actions and scenes we see are quite fitting and in a way i can't avoid to think that he's somewhat "in control" of the whole situation to bring the best outcome possible for Rin and their daughters.
Concerning Zero... it's something to be expected in this kind of production or anime (and possibly the last one in moder-day scenario retain this pattern of behavior) but overhall it's coming all good and fine for me xd
I mentioned Shippo.... they MUST show him eventually! Could be cool (but maybe too cool to be real) to have a teen version of him xD

Helloo Rukis ^^ It has been definitely a while (three years lol) but i've recently rewatched some videos and amv of the final season and i recalled we briefly discussed about the first ones, i am curious to know about your opinions x3 Overhall i am positive and happy about it. The very ending in particular it's nice and leave with a very positive tone.
