Your name means everything, on VolTerra, and the name of Warlord Kravar is a tremendous one indeed. Victor of many battles that would've claimed the lives of lesser fighters, Kravar is a champion among his people, protecting them from those who would try to conquer or pillage them.
Kravar is also a connoisseur of the arts, and found himself drawn to Andre's gallery. Curious to know what it was like to be part of it, volunteered for petrification in a moment of victory. He's always wanted to have a statue of himself, after all.

Oooohhhh, so basically using his petrified body as a mold? I can dig.
I wouldn't know if it was: my copy was in Japanese, and the language proved too dense for me to futz through it like I did the other Japanese games in my collection at the time (for what it's worth, I can read and speak some basic Japanese). XD
